Five Reasons Why My Best Friend Is The Greatest
Kristen Dobbins

I love my boyfriend so much and think that he's the greatest, but I wholeheartedly believe that my best friend is my other soul mate. She's my partner in crime, my homie, my biffsta (best friend forever/sister, duh). Our friendship is infinite. I could name a million, but these are the top five reasons why she's the greatest:

1. She showed me how to be stylish (well, as stylish as I can be with a lack of fashion sense).

Since poppin' out the womb, I have never had a single lick of fashion sense. When I was in middle school, I was the one wearing leggings with some sort of graphic on them underneath a jean skirt with an equally awful vest and band t-shirt. It wasn't pretty. If I wouldn't have met my best friend on my first day of high school, I probably would have continued plunging into a dark, awful spiral of fashion disasters. However, my best friend showed me not only how to be able to pick out a sensible outfit, but also how to be thrifty and unique. Goodwill was our main thing and she is a God at finding timeless treasures in that place. I will always thank her for showing me her mad skills.

2. She taught me how to not take sh*t from anyone.

Everyone that knows my best friend can say that she is one of the toughest people they know. Even when I, her best friend, would say something sassy to her, I'd know to expect a guaranteed kidney punch within the next ten to fifteen seconds. I'm still a straight up wimp and pacifist most of the time, but sometimes my sass comes out and I give it right back to whoever is giving me crap, all thanks to the strong girl teachings of my best friend.

3. She showed me that whenever I want something, to go for it, no matter what.

No matter what, if she finds something that she's passionate about or loves, she'll go for it, even if it's just for a hobby. Just as I write for the Odyssey because I love to write, she writes in her spare time too because it's something that she's passionate about. If it wasn't for her constantly being so supportive of me and my goals, I wouldn't be where I am doing what I'm doing.

4. She showed me what real humor is.

Anyone that is close to her can tell you that she is 110% the funniest person you'll ever meet on this planet. Almost every word that comes out of her mouth is freaking hilarious. Whether it's movie quotes combined with imitations or just her talking about something completely random, I'm never not laughing whenever we're around each other. It's the best.

5. She showed me what true friendship is and I'll forever have her to thank for that.

Love you biffsta, to the moon and back.

I'll never forget the day that someone told me these words: "Madison, I think you're a good friend to everyone but yourself." I stood there completely in awe of that statement. Now, I realize that you can't fully be there for other people unless you're there for yourself, too. You can't show up for others until you're willing to show up for yourself.

Here are five things everyone should learn in order to be a better friend to themselves. These steps are hard, but they're so worth it.
