It’s a time to relax

While the holidays are usually a stressful time for many people, what with the gift shopping and the food prep, for college students they’re a time to relax. They’ve already had to go through the stressful times with finals week and the “end of semester crunch,” but they got through it and coming home for the holidays is a way for them to relax. You can sit around the fire by the light of the Christmas tree, snuggle with your pets and listen to Christmas music, or bake delicious Christmas cookies with your family. Any way you slice it, as a college student, the holidays are simply a time for relaxation.

You Can Spend Quality Time With Your Family

After all those months you spent at college, working hard, studying and writing papers, and preparing to take your final exams, you’ve been away from your family. The holidays are your opportunity to spend time with them. Sit down with your family and laugh and share a good time together. Remind yourself what it means to have that family time, and take advantage of it.

All the Good Food!

If you have a meal plan at college, you’ll find yourself missing out on a lot of really good meals, particularly those you get at home. Going home for the holidays means not just a single meal you’ll eat at home but an array of delicious food set out before you. A big family dinner with the most delicious foods you’ll eat and tasty holiday treats. All this good food you can get will surely surpass anything you eat at your college dining hall.

You’re a College Student

Well here’s the good news…since you’re a college student, your family probably doesn’t expect a ton of presents, because well, you’re broke. Being a student is your full-time job, and really your only income has been all the gratification you get from your hard work. So, if you have no money, you won’t be able to buy them the $100 presents they deserve, and hopefully, they understand that. Also, your family understands going to college is a full-time job, so they know your time has been limited. They don’t expect that buying them Christmas presents has been your priority. The pressure is off this holiday season to buy your family expensive gifts.

All the Time Off!

Unlike when you’re in high school, when you’re in college you get tons of time off for the holidays! You have plenty of time to sit back, relax, and enjoy your holiday season. There’s no need to worry about all the homework you only have 2 weeks to do because for one, you don’t have any homework, and two, you have an entire month off. As I said before, the holidays are a time of relaxation for you, and I can honestly say that these are definitely reasons to love them when you’re a college student.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
