As a member of Siena Heights University's chapter of Phi Sigma Sigma, a social sorority, I have been able to reap the benefits of involvement with Greek Life. I was so excited to get to see all my sisters after a summer apart, and our reunion prompted me to think about why/how my involvement with Greek Life has helped me grow and why more people should get involved.
1. You build organizational skills.
Based on your position and committees, you are in charge of planning and leading certain evens each semester. The planning process requires you to prepare an event with purpose and organize the logistics. This experiences enables you to be familiar and have fun with organizing events (it looks good on a resume too)!
2. You gain leadership experience.
As the presiding Archon (president) of the chapter, I can certainly attest that my involvement with Phi Sigma Sigma has helped me grow as a leader. Not only do you lead the events that you plan, you must also make decisions within your position with the chapter in mind. This helps you learn to think as a leader by putting the group's interests first.
3. You strengthen collaborative skills and build connections.
You collaborate and connect with others within the chapter, the national sorority, and other organizations on campus. Sisters with different positions often collaborate on larger events such as formal, and the chapter gets involved with other organizations on campus by collaborating on events such as dances and philanthropy events.
4. You make a difference.
Greek Life strongly promotes philanthropy. Phi Sigma Sigma's national philanthropy focuses on school and college readiness. We hold events to raise money and supplies for school and college readiness throughout the year, and we volunteer at/organize other philanthropic events throughout the year. We love making a difference!
5. And of course, you develop life-lasting friendships.
As a commuter, I am so glad that I found Phi Sigma Sigma. My experience at Siena Heights would be very different without my sisters. I know that my sisters always have my back, and I am so grateful for their friendship.
Once a Phi Sigma Sigma, always a Phi Sigma Sigma.
