Per B.o.B, if you want to be “drinking a German beer with a Cuban cigar in the middle of Paris with a Dominican broad," you're probably going to have to know a language other than English. I get it, English is spoken in so many foreign countries, but using English abroad can be tough as a tourist. The phrases ein dunkel bier (one dark beer, in German) and dónde está el baño (where is the bathroom, in Spanish) can only get you so far.
Sometimes the best way to blend in and appreciate another culture is by learning another language, and here's why.
You're no longer an "American tourist."
Many of us travel throughout our time at college and sometimes that means traveling overseas. Frankly, if you can speak another language, you're an asset to whomever you're traveling with. Be able to “blend in" and not be immediately recognized as American can sometimes play in your favor.
You can live or study abroad.
Being able to speak another language means you can spend a semester (or more) in another country and function because you know that estar embarazada does not mean that you're embarrassed in Spanish, rather it means that you're pregnant.
You can meet new people and develop new relationships.
A second language allows you to communicate with a whole new pool of people. Whether you're looking to create business relationships, friendships or something more romantic, a foreign language allows you to express yourself when speaking with others.
You understand another culture.
The United States is very different than many other countries around the world. Part of the beauty about learning a new language is that you also learn about that language's culture. This can broaden your horizons and even encourage you to be more open-minded.
You can better appreciate the world around you.
With everything going on today, I think that fear of the unknown is a huge reason for ignorance and distrust. Opening your horizons to all of the benefits that come with knowing a second language can help you better understand the reason behind both cultural and religious traditions.
