Valentine's Day is a swarm of overpriced chocolate, stuffed animals, and flowers. Significant others scurry across the tiled grocery store floor as if it's a race for the gold. My question is...why? What is the point of celebrating Valentines Day? What is so special about this one day over the other 364 Days? Here are five reasons why strong couples don't need valentines day.
1. What is so romantic about crowds?
For the day of love, you daydream about a perfect dinner for two, piano music flowing gently in the background, while flowers of all different colors surround you. The conversation will be good. Her dress will be red and so will his tie.
Except it won't.
You will wait in line for over an hour to get a semi-exceptional seat at a sub-par restaurant. There will be an attempt at a romantic atmosphere, but it will be drowned out by the conversation of other guests trying to spoil their significant others.
2. Valentine's Day gifts suck.
Nothing says I love you like an overpriced box of chocolates, a large teddy bear that you do not have room for, and expensive flowers that will be gone the next week. Cliche Valentine's Day gifts may be a cute gesture to impress your girlfriend in the start, but how many of these teddy bears does she need? Did she eat all of the chocolates?
3. It's fun to boycott the norms of society.
Be different! Save your money for something else. Spend the day in bed watching nothing but reruns of your favorite television shows while cuddling up to your significant other. Instead of ordering your favorite meal at a restaurant, attempt to cook it at home! (My own was filled with modern art museums and my town's lame historical monument just because we never had actually been there).
4. What about the other holidays or events?
If it is such a big holiday, shouldn't I get off of work? Should my entire family be able to spend Valentine's Day together? What about college? Does this mean my exam is canceled? What about the people that are single?
5. What's so different about February 14th?
What is so special about February 14th? Is it the only day in the entire year someone is allowed to show their loved one how much they appreciate them? If you are as lovey-dovey as your overpriced Valentine's Day card claims you are, then you realize that there is not a difference. If you love someone, you love them every day. There is no reason for a particular day in February to show this. Love them with REAL love, not tacky chocolates, teddy bears, and flowers.
