Five Out Of The Box Romance Movies

Even though Valentines Day isn't for a while, these films are great during any time of year due to their unique subject matter and content.

1. "The Fabulous Destiny of Amélie Poulain" by Jean-Pierre Jeunets

If you are interested in a Parisian romance film, this will be a unique film for you. This whimsical French love story is the highest grossing French film in the United States, and depicts the life of a character in isolation. One of the main protagonist, Amélie, tries to help better the lives of others, and in the process she finds herself falling in love. Quirky elements, witty comedic dialogue, and the beauty of Paris are all aspects that heighten the intrigue of this film.

2. "7th Heaven" (1927) by Frank Borzage

If you are interested in silent films, this German one follows the unlikely love story between a prostitute and a sewer worker. Together they fall in love with World War I looming. This story is a unique dramatic tale, and explores the theme of a tender unexpected romance, with the juxtaposition of its’ harsh surroundings.

3. "The Lobster" by Yorgos Lanthimos

This film is slightly terrifying, but nonetheless has an intriguing plot. It is set in a dystopian future where single people are given 45 days to find a romantic partner, or they will be turned into an animal. This is very much a nontraditional love story, but with it comes a surprisingly comedic and weird romance that is off the beaten path. For those that enjoy such genres, this may be of interest to you.

4. "Lars and the Real Girl" by Craig Gillespie

Communication is often said to be the key to any relationship. What if,however, communication could not be established in the most conventional ways? The film's main protagonist, Lars, has a history of fearing intimacy and abandonment. As such, through a series of fumbled events, he finds himself in a relationship with a life-sized doll. This unconventional plot may not appeal to all, but the fact that Ryan Gosling plays Lars may intrigue a few.

5. "Her by Spike" Jonze

Set in the future, the main character, Theodore Twambly, struggles to find purpose in his life. This is, however, until he develops a relationship with an artificially intelligent operating system. This movie can be interpreted and analyzed through a philosophical lens, by presenting questions about the self and the true purpose of existence. On the surface, it is a beautifully shot film, and presents a love story in an unconventional and intriguing way. On a deeper level, it showcases the alienation of modern society, and the dynamics of the convenience of a relationship with technology, rather than a person.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
