4. "Lars and the Real Girl" by Craig Gillespie
Communication is often said to be the key to any relationship. What if,however, communication could not be established in the most conventional ways? The film's main protagonist, Lars, has a history of fearing intimacy and abandonment. As such, through a series of fumbled events, he finds himself in a relationship with a life-sized doll. This unconventional plot may not appeal to all, but the fact that Ryan Gosling plays Lars may intrigue a few.
5. "Her by Spike" Jonze
Set in the future, the main character, Theodore Twambly, struggles to find purpose in his life. This is, however, until he develops a relationship with an artificially intelligent operating system. This movie can be interpreted and analyzed through a philosophical lens, by presenting questions about the self and the true purpose of existence. On the surface, it is a beautifully shot film, and presents a love story in an unconventional and intriguing way. On a deeper level, it showcases the alienation of modern society, and the dynamics of the convenience of a relationship with technology, rather than a person.
