When listing all the things that make Ohio University great, students rarely place classes on the top of their list. Often students fall into the barely caring "C's get degrees" attitude that leads to dreading the homework binge that Sunday night is sure to bring. However, taking time to truly appreciate the academic options available to students can transform your college experience. Finding one class where you actually enjoy the work, the professor or both can make all that money your paying feel a little more worth it.
Below are five OU classes that will challenge and entertain you.
1. Human Sexualities (CFS 3601)
"An introduction that explores human sexualities with a focus on the ability to form relationships that are integrative, creative and recreative. ... There is a strong emphasis on the socio-cultural construction of sexualities and the ways in which gender scripts, sexism and heterosexism impact individual development and functioning. Relationship, sexuality and spirituality are deeply intertwined, which is why the course considers these elements in addition to the biological and physiological aspects of sexualities."
This class will push you outside your comfort zone with assignments and discussions that engage and sometimes intimidate you. Put real effort into this course, and you will not be disappointed.
2. Critical Approaches to Popular Literature (ENG 2100)
"'Coming of Age in Harry Potter's Britain' will examine two of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter novels, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" (2003) and "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" (2005), to frame an exploration of contemporary British history, culture, society and politics through fiction and film. "
Full disclosure: This course does have non-Harry Potter required reading. However, having to read Harry Potter as "homework" makes it worth it.
3. Fundamentals of Ice Skating (PED 1209)
"Designed to help students gain the knowledge and skills necessary to develop a lasting interest in attaining and maintaining personal health and wellness throughout their lifetime."
Relive all your middle school "Ice Princess" dreams in this four-week course. Plus, you get your workout and class credit in one.
4. Young Adult Literature (ENG 3560)
"Examines the historical development and characteristics of young adult literature, including a focus on methods of instruction."
Probably the heaviest course load out of the classes on this list, but it's a must-take if you're a lover of literature. With eight to 12 YA books on the syllabus, you will walk away from this class with a new favorite story and a fuller bookshelf.
5. Storytelling, Technology and Digital Media in Theme Parks (COMM 4023)
"Examines media design, technology and storytelling principles that are employed in the development of theme parks. Special emphasis is placed on the integration of different forms of media into one cohesive immersive environment. Includes an off-campus field experience."
Studying technology has never been so magical. Oh, and that "off-campus field experience" mentioned above? Just a little eight-day field trip at the end of the semester to Disney World and Universal Studios.
