I've always thought of movies as a visual book. Watching movies has always been a hobby of mine, especially during my childhood. The list of movies I watched throughout my childhood. However, there are a few movies that were unforgettable. These are the movies that I enjoyed so much that I'll rewatch them every once in a while. Here are five movies that I've watched in my childhood that I still enjoy watching.

1. Rent

My computer teacher from the sixth grade was obsessed with Rent. When she told us that it was a great movie, I decided to give a try (thinking back at it, this probably wasn't very appropriate for me at the time). After watching it, I loved it. The music was amazing and the fact that it took place in New York City made it even better. Once I watched it, I completely forgot about it until my junior year of college. My friends mentioned the fact that they loved the movie as well, and wanted to watch it together. Even since then, I've watched Rent thousands of times.

2. Coming to America

Even though this movie was inappropriate for a twelve-year-old child, my dad never stopped me from watching it. He even watched it with me. Eddie Murphy as an African prince trying to adjust to living independently for the first time is pretty hilarious. Plus, I was so fascinated to see how Queens, New York (my hometown) was like during the eighties. Since watching it nine years, I've watched Coming to America on numerous occasions (Netflix, DVD, on BET). There are also some instances when my dad joins me, making it feel very nostalgic.

3. Monsters Inc.

This was another movie my dad watched with me when I was younger. I distinctly remember him buying the VHS cassette of this movie when I was eight-years-old. I would watch that cassette so many times; it later fell apart because of that. Even though I haven't watched Monsters Inc. as often as the movies I've mentioned, I love to watch how cute and innocent most of the movie is. Plus, I enjoy watching my dad watch this movie on his own.

4. Princess Diaries

Hands down, The Princess Diaries is one of my favorite movies of all time. This movie came at a time where I wish I could've been born a princess. I loved seeing the outfits and the "princess lessons". Pretending to be Mia Thermopolis was my favorite past-time when I was in first grade. I now watch this movie whenever I'm bored on a Saturday morning. I love thinking back to the time I really believed I was a princess.

5. Pokemon: The First Movie

Like every person my age, I was obsessed with Pokemon. I had every single episode on VHS. I collected Pokemon Cards. I always "needed" then latest Pokemon game for the Nintendo Gameboy/Advanced/SP/DS. I especially obsessed with the movies the Pokemon franchise made over the past couple of years. The first movie was one I loved watching. It was dramatic enough for a four-year-old, which made me want to watch it over and over again. And since I am still obsessed with Pokemon, I love to watch this movie every once in a while.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
