5 Last Minute Midwest Vacation Destinations

This is a list of some last minute vacations that can be very cost effective and time effective. For someone who isn’t the most apt at planning this list is for you.

1. Mackinac Island, Michigan

This picturesque 3.8 square mile Island is located off the northern coast of Michigan in Lake Huron. Something unique to this island is the fact that there are no cars allowed on the island. This little slice of paradise is best experienced through beautiful walking tours, bicycling tours and carriage tours. The island is host to many historical sites and museums. Mackinac also has a myriad of water sports available and world class golf courses.

2. Bowling Green, Kentucky

Nestled in southern hills of Kentucky, is the town of Bowling Green. This southern city is jam packed with adventurous activities such as white water rafting and horseback riding. Mammoth cave, one of the largest cave systems in the United States, is located just an hour away. With miles to explore, the national park service offers dozens of tours every week ranging from beginner to very strenuous. For car enthusiasts, the Corvette assembly factory and museum are located in Bowling Green and have daily tours.

3. Nashville, Tennessee

First and for most, Opryland is the place to be. It is full of restaurants and bars and country music is always playing. It’s always a must to go out and get some good southern BBQ. Found in downtown Nashville is the Country Music Hall of Fame where you can learn about the roots of country music. And of course there country music live almost everywhere you go. For some outdoor activities the Nashville Zoo is a family favorite as well as the Cheekwood Botanical Garden and Museum of Art.

4. St. Louis, Missouri

St. Louis’s famous Gateway Arch is must stop landmark. Take a trip up to the top of the arch and see the entire downtown area. The historic public Forest Park is a beautiful outdoor that is totally free to walk around and just take in the outdoors. For baseball fans Busch Stadium home of the St. Louis Cardinals is a great day trip. Another interesting tour is a tour of the Anheuser-Busch Brewery.

5. Chicago, Illinois

This urban wonderland is full of things to do during the day and at night. You can’t go to Chicago and not go the Shedd Aquarium and experience the vast undersea life. Don’t forget to grab lunch at the famous hotdog restaurant Portillo’s and maybe a slice or two at Giordano’s. For some free tourist stops, the famous Bean is a great place to take a mirror picture, and Navy Pier is always a great day time activity. For a lively night scene, downtown Wrigleyville is full of bars and clubs.
