Feminists made their voice heard during the election for the 45th President of The United States. Often times celebrities were sent out to campaign and be the face of the feminist movement to gain attention. The list of these celebrities included Amy Schumer, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Lena Dunham, and Madonna. Many of these women have made some very good points to contribute to the conversation surrounding gender equality and I’m not against feminism in the slightest. I agree with Amy Schumer when she says, “I think a lot of people don’t know what feminism means. It’s social, political, and economic equality for women. If you’re against that, you’re crazy.” Even though many of the statistics that women who feel they are oppressed use to back up their opinions are misleading and false, you’re still crazy if you don’t believe in social, political, and economic equality for women. What I am against is promising you’ll give blow jobs to anyone who votes for the candidate of your choosing as Madonna did, "If you vote for Hillary Clinton, I will give you a blow job. Ok? I'm really good. I'm not a douche and I'm not a tool. I take my time, I have a lot of eye contact and I do swallow.” What I am against is Lena Dunham wishing she could take advantage of women’s rights and have an abortion. What I am against is Amy Schumer talking about sex like it is the most important part of woman’s existence, “Look men, you are not penetrating our vaginas, we are engulfing your penises.”
This is not feminism. This is not social, political, and economic equality for women. It’s disgusting, embarrassing, and uncalled for. You don’t need to talk about your vagina to be a feminist. You don’t need to promise blow jobs to anyone to be a feminist. You don’t have to get an abortion to become a feminist. What you need are morals and values that help you achieve your dreams. Hard work and determination is all that should determine your success. There are many women who have shown this and have accomplished great feats but society refuses to acknowledge them because they're Republican. The media surrounds and praises liberal woman who scream about vaginas and promise blow jobs because they are promising feminism but yet they can’t surround Republican woman who actually put feminism into action everyday without mentioning any private parts.
Here are some women that feminists should be acknowledging but aren’t:
1. Jenean Hampton
(The Logan Journal)
Currently the Lieutenant governor of Kentucky, Jenean Hampton is the first African American female lieutenant governor of her state. Before becoming lieutenant governor she grew up in inner-city Detroit, got a college degree, joined the United States Air Force, and worked her way up to plant manager in the corrugated packaging industry. The Official Website of the Commonwealth of Kentucky speaks highly of Hampton and her mother, “Despite watching her mother struggle to raise four girls, Jenean knew she was blessed to live in a nation where people could rise from poverty. Her mother demonstrated by example the value of hard work, and Jenean worked in banking and automotive industries to raise money for college.”
2. Nikki Haley
(S.C.gov)
The governor of South Carolina and now President Elect Trump’s pick as the ambassador to the U.N. has created over 82,000 jobs and has brought the unemployment rate to record lows in her state. The State of South Carolina talks about her finding her work ethic at an early age, “Born in Bamberg, the daughter of Indian immigrants, Governor Haley’s first job was keeping the books for her family’s clothing store- at the age of 13.”
3. Ivanka Trump
(Ivanka Trump)
Her #WomenWhoWork campaign that was recently launched is an inspiration in itself. She speaks of the goal of the women who work campaign on her website, “I want to inspire and empower women to architect lives that they love, lives that are uniquely their own and not based on the expectations of anyone other than themselves.” A mom, an entrepreneur, and a leading role of her Father's campaign; talk about a woman who really do it all.
4. Megyn Kelly
(Wikipedia)
Named one of the most influential people in Time in 2014, Megyn Kelly is one of the most influential journalists of her time. In her latest book, Settle For More, she offers good advice for everyone not just women, “Tough times can be stressful, but they also have a way of centering us, of shining a light through the darkness…. The hard times remind you it is possible to change your life. To do better. To be better. To settle for more.”
5. Kellyanne Conway
(The Daily Dot)
The first woman in history to lead a successful presidential campaign. She always draws back on how she learned how to work hard on the farm she lived on while she was growing up, “The faster you went, the more money you'd make." And when asked how she will balance her family and work life she used my favorite quote, "I would say that I don't play golf and I don't have a mistress, so I'll have a lot of time these other men don't."
Now these are five feminists that I can get behind. Five feminists that show what hard work and determination can get you. That women are not oppressed and do have the power to become what they want to with a good work ethic. There are women who have brought social, political, and economic equality for women without talking about abortions, vaginas, or blow jobs. They are feminists not by declaration but by what they have shown women can accomplish.
