Film has always been there for me when my emotions proved to be just too vivid for my liking. Storytelling through the art of moving pictures can lift spirits and aid in positive growth for the soul. Which yes, can be just as pretentious as I made that sound. These five films serve to be the ones I've come across that never fail in making me smile or at least give me two and a half hours of emotional freedom. Whenever you're feeling down, just turn to this list and hopefully it can do the same for you.
1. Amélie (2001)
Amélie Poulain is the epitome of what it's like to be shy in a busy city. Her earnest, yet reserved attempts at bringing joy to those around her —
while finding it difficult to do the same for herself — is enough positivity to filter out a slew of bad days. Even the coloring in this French film errs on the bright side with vibrant yellows and soft, sunset oranges to give a warm feel to each scene.2. Matilda (1996)
"Matilda," like all Roald Dahl tales, honors the intelligence and determination of children and shows that the know-it-all adults can be the true antagonists. This film adaptation is for anyone who's felt berated by others who think they're better than them. It also values the gift of reading and the knowledge that comes with it. Also Danny DeVito directed and stars in said film and everyone needs a little more DeVito in their life.
3. The Way, Way Back (2013)
For those days when you feel like the whole world is against you, The Way, Way Back helps bring it all into perspective. Following the summer misadventures of socially awkward Duncan, there is charm and tenderheartedness in his attempts at letting loose with the help of his newly made, middle-aged friend, Owen. Don't let anyone make you feel like a three in life — you're strictly a 10.
4. Moonrise Kingdom (2012)
Love comes with a few bumps in the road, even when you're 12. Wes Anderson's quirky and endearing film is both aesthetically pleasing and overall truthful in its exposition on first time romance for Suzy and Sam. This bildungsroman shows that anything is possible as long as you have enough guts.
5. A League of Their Own (1992)
Geena Davis, Madonna, and a curmedgeon Tom Hanks — these are only the starting points as to why this movie is so interesting to watch and inspiring for most girls. Whenever you feel like you can't do something because of society's rules, it's nice to know that there are some chances in life to break those rules and A League of Their Own shows just that.
Now go out and watch some films and enjoy those moments away from the mind.
