As a devoted Potter fan since practically birth, there is nothing I am anticipating more so than the "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" film. Since word first broke about two years ago, twenty-five percent of my brain is devoted to thinking about this movie every day. All true Potterheads knew that the seventh book and the eighth movie were not the end of our beloved hero. The production and print release of Cursed Child were milestones in our magical world, but somewhat of a disappointment. However, we can still cling to the hope offered by "Fantastic Beasts" and our new leading man, Eddie Redmayne, aka Newt Scamander.
Up until Thursday, October 12, we had been told that J.K. Rowling was assisting in the screenwriting of three movies in the pre-Potter series. But this past week, much to the delight of the Harry Potter community, the queen herself, Rowling, informed us that the trilogy would actually be five movies. We know it’s not a prequel to Harry Potter, and we know these stories will, for the most part, take place in 1920’s America, a different wizarding community than we’re used to. We’ve all seen the trailers and the very vague plot-line: Scamander travels to America and somehow he unleashes the creatures in his magical bag. We know that there’s going to be some reference to Dumbledore, or hopefully an appearance. But what we don’t know is how this plot will last five films. All we can be certain about is that it will be artfully mastered and full of J.K. Rowling’s signature interwoven characters and storylines.
While there is no book to prelude the movies and set our expectations, we all knew from the subtle hints of Hedwig’s theme in the trailers and teasers that this would be something, well, for lack of a better word, fantastic. This opens up a whole new world of possibilities, with even more potential spin-off series, Potter references, character development, new points of views, different eras, Pottermore material, and even the option for theme park expansions. Many people have already started the onslaught of tweets and posts begging for seven movies to mirror the original series. Regardless of the number of movies and subsequent stories we are gifted with, I like to remain positive that we will be able to fall in love with a whole new cast of characters. And, let’s not forget, people, that we should view the fact that Fantastic Beasts is happening at all as a blessing because it wasn’t so long ago that Rowling promised us she was done with writing Potter for good. But here we are with new Pottermore content, a play, and at least five more movies to look forward to. We see you, J.K. Rowling, we see you.
