Maine is home to hundreds of amazing restaurants - no matter your preference. But in the heart of the state's coast exists five classic restaurants that every native and traveler alike must try before the end of the summer. After all, there's a reason our license plates say "Vacationland."
1. Morse’s Sauerkraut – Washington
This Eurodeli in rural Washington / Waldoboro offers a lunch menu with assorted sausages, homemade krauts and delicious pickles. The rustic décor of the dining room makes the customer feel as if they were actually in Bavaria. Outside, a market and deli provide imported samples of wine, cheese, meats and desserts for purchase.
2. The Lobster Pound – Lincolnville
Right along Route 1 in Lincolnville Beach lies one of the Coast’s best stops for authentic seafood. Whether you’re a fan of fried scallops, stuffed haddock,or fresh lobster – this iconic sit-down restaurant on the oceanfront should be a destination for every traveler.
3. Angler’s – Searsport, Hampden, Newport
Recently expanded to greater Bangor, Angler’s Restaurant includes the best cuisine from the land and the sea. Once again, fried seafood and surf and turf top the list of best dishes here. Try and save room for dessert though because the Hot Fudge Sundaes and Strawberry Shortcake are to die for!
4. Moody’s Diner – Waldoboro
Along Route 1, you’ll pass a lot of diners, but this one just past the hill in Waldoboro is a local icon. Whether you hankering for a salad sandwich, homemade soup, or a meatball sub, Moody’s has you covered. But like I’ve said before, save room for dessert! Their selection of pies is second to none in the region.
5. Taste of Maine – Woolwich
The furthest south on the list, this busy restaurant just before the city of Bath offers some of the best lobsters in all of the Maine coast. Additionally, their views of the ocean and the surrounding bay make for a perfect backdrop. As the name suggests, a visit to the coast is not complete without eating at the Taste of Maine.
