Here's to a new year!

With the Fall 2016 semester fastly approaching and anxiety quickly rising, students are slowly beginning to become overwhelmed with stress. If you're one of the students feeling the anxiety over a new school year, the best way to combat it is to set a goal list for yourself for the semesters to come. While they may not always be effective, a goal list is a good outline to lay out for yourself.

Goal 1: Buy a planner

While buying a planner isn't exactly a 'goal', it's a great way to start. A planner not only helps you stay up top of all your assignments and events in your week, it helps you stay aware on the upcoming months ahead of you. Also it's always fun to mark 'Semester Break!' in one as soon as you get it.

Goal 2: Start your work right away

Now this may be the hardest goal to set for yourself, but don't procrastinate. Clearly, this is easier said than done, but procrastinating is the easiest way to allow yourself to fall behind. The easiest way to combat this is to start work right away. Do your work step by step. Did you just get an essay? Start the introduction that night. Did you get worksheets for homework? Start and complete the first page. Do everything step-by-step, it allows you to have more free time.

Goal 3: Don't pull an all-nighter

All-nighters sound like all fun and games until you actually have one. All-nighters are good for one thing, and that is regret. The only thing you get out of all-nighters are a day full of restlessness and not being focused on anything. Don't pull all-nighters unless it's the last resort.

Goal 4: Plan out your driving/bus schedule

The most important thing for you to be is on time. Planning out when the latest you can leave your house to catch a bus or drive is important. If you're riding the bus, learn the time the buses leave and which one would get you there at the perfect time. If you're driving, learn the back routes for your drive. Even if it's the longest way there, make sure you know every possible way to get there and to learn how long each way would take you. The worst thing you can do is to arrive at class when it's over in twenty minutes.

Goal 5: Eat breakfast

Sure this point sounds like an elementary school health class, but breakfast is important because it gives your body the needed energy to make it through the morning classes. There's nothing worse than getting to class and falling asleep right away. Breakfast will give you the added boost needed, even if it's for one class.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
