Fitting Behavior

This is very redundant, but in the wake of the results of the recent election, emotions have been going haywire. There's been peaceful protests and not-so-peaceful ones. Fear has been shown, both in writing and actions. And there's a good reason, too.

Everybody's been posting to Facebook and other types of social media showing their feelings on the matter. Here's mine. Not to bypass all the other supported candidates, but the main concerns are mostly the supporters of Trump and Hillary. I'm not going to claim having an objective view on both, because I don't. But here's my view on the respective supporters (this is about one incident in particular).

To the Trump supporters :

Alright, I can't really write this without showing which side I was favoring. (Dear editors, I apologize.) I admit, I dislike the idea of Trump being president; however, according to polls, he won. But, that's no excuse to harass fellow human beings who voted for the other candidate. The harassment of fellow students, reported in current news, is horrible. You're educated! (I thought.) You are surrounded by different viewpoints and perspectives! Not just limited to schools, either. Don't tell me you grew up in a place that such thoughts, like xenophobia, are fine. (If you do, chances are you don't know what xenophobia means.) To the Trump supporters that did such an action and to those that support it, you're just furthering the case on the fear factor that you're so confused about. "Why are people scared? What's the big deal?" For the exact actions that are being done. For the mindset that's been deemed acceptable. Those "jokes" of yours aren't just jokes. Those things that Trump said are bad enough. Your actions are making it even worse (not sure just how worse it can get, but I'd rather not know). Please, prove me wrong. I'd never be so happy to be proven wrong. Your candidate showed an admirable amount of grace when he accepted the presidency. Don't shatter that tenuous image. Also, trust me, your fellow Trump supporters that know proper human decency? They're probably face-palming right now. The image was already ridiculous—any worse, does "subhuman" mean anything to you?

To the Hillary supporters:

On the other hand, I see some things that I am rather ashamed to write about, also. To those who aren't Trump supporters, there's reason to fear with all the harassment and bigotry running rampant—let's face it, it's pretty bad—so why are people fabricating stories? To the UL student who fabricated her story of being harassed by Trump supporters, why? (NO SERIOUSLY. WHY. WHY, FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THINGS WITH COMMON SENSE, WHY.) Do you realize what you've done? It's bad enough that we lost already, but what are you doing? To those Trump supporters doing awful acts, they've already did and will do more terrible acts, so why did you have to make it worse? Now, further acts may be dismissed as "false reporting" or "fabrications." Those rumors of being paid to "make Trump look bad" may be fired up all over again. Those Hillary supporters, those who are victimized and hurt, those who are in support for those in pain, are probably not too pleased with this event. (Me saying "not too pleased" being an understatement.) You just gave Trump validity, on top of the presidency already. (Plus, made Hillary's shaky record of good faith even shakier; FBI just cleared her, come on!) Trump accepted his win with grace, let Hillary do the same with her loss. It was a good run, don't blemish it.

Now while I'm on the topic, I do apologize for the harsh words I said above (I'll regret for reading the riot act to the people later, I'm sure of it. I'm not much better. I wasn't able to show the grace I wanted to feel. You want to read me the riot act? Please, go for it.) but please, stop. Reality has enough scars already, stop adding unnecessary ones. Look at these numbers:

As of November 13, the AP was reporting these popular vote totals:

Donald Trump 60,350,241 (47.3%)
Hillary Clinton 60,981,118 (47.79%)

Yes, there's a 630,000~ number difference, but there's (roughly) 60,000,000 people who agreed with Trump's views. Remember, some voted for him for some of the views he stood for and him being the only candidate. There's not even a percent difference between the two candidates. I admit, I messed up too. Earlier this week, I was expressing my opinions on who I thought was more fitting to be president. Majority of the group I was chatting with agreed with me. It wasn't until later that I found out that one of the members of the group was a Trump supporter. Being egocentric as I was, I didn't consider others' feelings into account. Looking back on it, I felt awful knowing that he/she was feeling awkward as they hung out around me and the others as we said how could people vote such a person. I apologize for generalizing Trump supporters. I apologize for acting out of line.

Please, remember we're all people, first and foremost. Political views aside, I would like to believe we can behave with proper decency and respect that all people want. Is it too hard to act civil? We should all support one another during this time. Sure, Hillary and Trump don't have to support each other. But they're two candidates with opposing views. We're the citizens that make up this country, united together over whatever's going to happen. We don't have to be buddies, but we don't have to be jerks, either.

All I'm going to say is, good luck to Trump (and to us) for the next four years!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
