Best And Worst First Week Of College Moments

College is a dramatic shift in one's life, and with hundreds of events, meeting so many new people, and newfound freedom, it can be overwhelming.

Starting college can be a fun yet scary experience.

There are so many things to learn and obstacles to overcome before you finally get in the groove of being a college student. Here are just a few of many factors that go into making the first week of college simultaneously the best and the worst.

Free T-Shirts

You can find a free shirt at practically any event, and most of the time you don't need to sign up or pay for any programs. Being a walking advertisement for on-campus housing or representing a large organization is enough of a motive for an institution to give every new student a free handout.

Meeting New People

Whether you come from a town thirty minutes away or ten hours away, you are bound to find someone new. Granted, it can be pretty rough in the beginning if you don't know a lot of people, but even though being on a large campus may be intimidating, friends can be found on your dorm floor and in your classes. Just bonding with someone over how you regret taking an eight am class can spark a long lasting friendship.

Freedom

This may be pretty obvious, but now you no longer have to constantly tell your parents where you are, what you are doing, who you are with, and a million other things before you can even leave the house. Now you have the freedom to go wherever you want, whenever you want.

Completely New Environment

A new campus brings an entirely new place to go explore, which can be great for the adventurous and a nightmare for those who get lost easily. The map on your phone will become your new best friend for the first week, or at least until become acclimated to your school.

Shared Bathrooms

Some might say this is the worst part of dorm life. Having a roommate and losing your personal space is one thing, but having to shower and share a bathroom with practically complete strangers changes the game. You definitely don't have to be a germaphobe to be at least a little grossed out by the bathrooms, especially if the people on your floor don't clean up after themselves.

Homework

The first week of college is easy; it's syllabus week. Even though it seems like everything is going smooth, the small quizzes, homework assignments and even tests can add up if you do not start working through all your tasks when you have time. Managing time is one of the most important responsibilities you have to take on when attending college.

Small Living Space

Whether you had your own room or shared it with siblings, having two people in a small room can pretty feel cramped. Making your dorm cozy, if done well, allows for proper utilization of your space but if you have too much stuff and not enough space, it can get cramped pretty quickly.

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
