The First Visit

Seeing your significant other for the first time in college.

The first time I visited my boyfriend in college, it was the happiest I’d been in awhile. Even though I have made many friends at App, no one holds a place in my heart like he does. I should have been excited for the App vs. Tennessee game like everyone else, but I was much more excited to go stay with my boyfriend in his dorm at UTK.

Every minute we spent together felt like the best gift I ever could have received. It was amazing to see him in his whole new life, in a new setting, and it was even better that he wanted me to be apart of it. Being three hours away from each other is hard, but these little visits are what makes all the lonely nights worth it. And he knows this, that is why at every turn he made me feel appreciated and thanked me for coming all this way just to see him. I have never met a nicer group of people than his friends. Each one not only was nice to me, but actually included me and tried to get to know me as a person, not just as their friend’s girlfriend.

The happiest I’ve been since I went to college was this visit. I know it sounds cliché, to be so young and in love, no one ever thinks it will last. But there is something special about us. We learn and grow from each other, we don’t focus on the distance, but instead appreciate the strong relationship that makes the distance irrelevant in the first place. Not only do we have love between us, but a closeness and comfort that I couldn’t feel with anyone else in my life.

And it hurts being apart, it really does. But I take comfort knowing that no matter where we are, that I will always have him there when I need him. College is only four years long, but if your relationship is strong then love can last forever.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!

There is nothing quite like family.

Family is kinda like that one ex that you always find yourself running back to (except without all the regret and the angsty breakup texts that come along with it).

No matter how long your class is, there's always time for the mind to wander. Much like taking a shower or trying to fall asleep, sitting in a classroom can be a time when you get some of your best ideas. But, more than likely, you're probably just trying to mentally cope with listening to a boring lecturer drone on and on. Perhaps some of the following Aristotle-esque thoughts have popped into your head during class.

Bob's Burgers is arguably one of the best and most well-written shows on tv today. That, and it's just plain hilarious. From Louise's crazy antics to Tina's deadpan self-confidence, whether they are planning ways to take over school or craft better burgers, the Belchers know how to have fun. They may not be anywhere close to organized or put together, but they do offer up some wise words once and awhile.
