The First Tattoo

Everybody I talked to said it was going to be painful.

Getting a tattoo is a unique experience that not everyone will choose to go through in their lives. In some states, you can get tattoos before you are even 18. In the state of South Carolina, it is required by law that you are 18 years of age in order to get a tattoo. So, if you’re really wanting one, and you live in SC, waiting until you’re 18 is difficult especially if you’re super pumped to get one.

My 18th birthday couldn’t come fast enough. I was overly excited to get my first tattoo. My dad was okay with it, and surprisingly, so was my mom. I had decided that I was going to get one on my foot. Everybody I talked to said it was going to be painful and I would probably have half of the tattoo that I intended to get because I would give up due to the pain. Weeks before, my brother’s fiancé and I looked for various foot tattoos with what I wanted it to say, and finally picked out the one I wanted. I talked to numerous people who already had foot tattoos and was super excited but very scared and nervous. Everyone had different stories regarding how bad they hurt, and I figured that it was going to be super difficult for me, especially since my pain tolerance is a 0/100.

Finally, the night came to where I was able to get the tattoo I wanted. I walked into the tattoo shop and proceeded to talk to the nice man behind the counter. I explained it was my 18th birthday and I wanted to get a tattoo that night. He was all for it, until I told him I wanted it on my foot. We went and sat down, and the artist proceeded to inform me that with zero pain tolerance, the foot was going to be a very rough spot to get my first tattoo, and strongly encouraged me to change spots and get it somewhere else. I insisted on getting it on my foot.

I showed him the design and my nerves kicked in. He had the stencil finished and placed on my foot and I was so nervous. I got on the table and asked so many questions. Finally, he said he was going to start. Once he started, it was a breeze. It didn’t hurt like everybody was saying it would and it actually was a great experience.

The artist, Josh, was very nice and answered all my questions. He kept me calm during the execution of the tattoo and before. The tattoo parlor was very clean, and everyone there was really nice and supportive through this life changing decision.

I highly recommend anyone and everyone to Gypsy Moon Tattoo, and artist Josh. I couldn’t be more proud of and happy with my new tattoo.

Everyone who is in college right now, or has ever been, knows the struggle of pulling in the strings at the last second. It seems impossible, and you have to do a LOT of things in order to assure your future for the next semester.

April Ludgate, historically, is a very annoyed person, and she doesn't hide it. Of all the times that I binged and re-binged "Parks and Rec," her attitude relates more and more to me.

The world is not always sunshine and rainbows, and you do not have to be, either.

Ask friends of mine to name a quality about me, and one a lot them will point out the fact that I am almost always smiling. I like to laugh and smile -- not to quote Buddy the Elf in April, but smiling is my favorite! It is probably my favorite go-to expression. However, what a lot of people do not see is that I have my down days. I have days when smiling and laughing is a real struggle, or when I have so much on my plate that going out of my way to behappy takes more effort than I have stored in me. Be it a symptom of college and growing up or a facet of life, I cannot always be content.
