Going into college, life gets pretty wild and overwhelming. For most of us, our parents had been guiding us every step of the way for the first eighteen years of our life, and at the beginning of august, all of that changed. Many of us had to make sure we had dinner plans figured out, had to go to class on our own without our parents forcing us, and if you are embarrassing like me, even do your own laundry. I know I have only been through a semester so far at Mississippi State, but I do believe I have picked up some knowledge on how to adjust to college life.

1. Go to Class. Seriously

I know everyone hears this 24/7. From grandparents, teachers, and Dr. Keenum (at every MSU related event), you believe you are not one of those lazy college students who sleep through class and don't care about school.

Trust me on this though, it truly is one of the biggest struggles in the morning to get out of bed because all you want to do is go back to sleep or turn on that Disney + instead of going to that 8 a.m. but what everyone says about going to class is actually true. Your grade does suffer from it, and the absences do rack up.

You don't want to be one of those people that the pathfinders go constantly looking for because it gets awkward when you open your door and your pathfinder awkwardly has to tell you to go to class.

2. Time management

After going to four classes throughout the day, all you will want to do is curl up in your bed and nap away the day, but just how important it is to go to class you also need to be on top of your schoolwork. College seems so easy because you barely have class and tests are so spread out. Yes, this is true, but that means there are not as many tests, A.K.A not as many chances to pull up your grade.

It makes life so much easier if you start looking over your notes at least a week or advance because it is not fun cramming for a huge test the night before and not leaving the library until 2 a.m. I promise you your college experience is 100x better if you know how to manage your time.

3. Get involved

Lastly, you need to get involved in something.

College can be scary.

A lot of people, like me, are coming from a small town. The number of people on campus can be shell-shock, and it is imperative that you meet people and make friends. MSU offers countless clubs, organizations, and other activities that make it so easy to meet people, and it is so worth it to take part in this. It makes the hard times in college better and having people there truly makes college the best time of your life.

I know these points are generic and cheesy, but they are so true and underrated. College is one of the most difficult times of your life, but if you really do follow this advice it can make it the most fun four years.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
