Respect Yourself

“Respect yourself enough to walk away from anything that no longer serves you, grows you, or makes you happy.”

Respect Yourself

Respect yourself enough to walk away from anything that no longer serves you, grows you, or makes you happy.”

I have spent a long time trying to make myself work for other people. Not just in the things I say, or the places I went, but also in the way I look. I have always stood up for what I believe in, I have always tried to do what I wanted to do, and I haven’t really given into influences that I felt weren’t best for me, but at the same time I never opened my mouth, and I never went against someone when I felt that they were wrong, I just kind of didn’t say anything and I let them say whatever they needed to.

But, as I grow up, as I finish up my college experience, and as I gain new experiences, I realize that I need to start doing things for me. I need to stick up for myself and for my beliefs, and I need to do things for me.

I think everyone could use a little lesson in that. Speak up for what you believe in, do things for you! But at the same time, accept the things that you cannot change. Whatever is meant for you will be yours soon, and honestly it will probably be much better than you could've ever wanted.

You are you, take that in, remember it. When things get hard, or you feel insignificant remember that there is no one else on this earth who is you. No one else looks exactly like you, no one else has exactly your talent or intelligent, and no one else has your heart. That is why it is so important to realize that you are so much better than you give yourself credit for. Myself included. I am going to state that again for anyone who really needs to hear it “We are all so much more than we give ourselves credit for.”

If something does not help you grow, does not lift you up, does not let you see your full potential, LEAVE IT. Life is way to short to stay with things that make you feel small. Whether it is a person, or a job, leave it, you will be better off, the best results come from when you are doing the thing you love, or with the person you love.

Life is good and so are you. You deserve all of the good out there no matter how many times it may seem like you don’t. Don’t let anything get you down, push through for yourself, push through for those who are following your example.

I wish for myself and for everyone else, the realization that we are all amazing, we all contribute such great things to the world, and generation after generation will help build the world up, how could we give up when change is on us?

I hope you find your sense of wonder.

I hope you respect and love yourself.

I hope you see the good in you.

And I hope you feel inspired one way or another.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
