My First Official Winter

I have never experienced seasons before, coming from humid Florida.

Both of my parents moved to Miami, Florida at the age of five and have not moved since then. Whenever someone finds out that I go to college in Boston, their first question is "How do you go from warm, sunny Florida to the tundra of Massachusetts?". It is certainly a drastic change, but less so when you consider my family roots and the inexplicably beautiful seasons that occur all throughout the North. I have visited places like Colorado, New York City, Boston, and North Carolina on trips, yet not for prolonged periods of time. Spending the fall here is so different and incredible to watch; the leaves begin to change into varying reds, yellows, oranges, and greens before they sadly fall to the ground to usher in winter.

My first visit to campus, during my junior year, occurred on a gloomy, rainy day in April, but it did not change my opinion. For my parents, however, they had their doubts that I would be able to brace this change to such cold weather, but it is still invigorating and in my opinion, can be more pleasant than a typical Miami day in April (after living in the same state for all of my life). After all of the stress of college applications, there is one question that I still get asked: "Are you ready? Do you think you can handle the cold?". I am and I can!

As September rolls in, the leaves slowly shift in color and to me, it is more than just a natural, everyday phenomenon; it is magical. I am living in those commercials of the children frolicking into previously neatly raked piles of leaves, swooshing some leaves and moving others into the air. From fall to spring in Miami, there are small bursts, albeit unpredictable, of perfectly brisk weather; nonetheless, it does not compare to what fall is like in the North and the overall visual experience. Everyone's outfits are stylish, light jackets are used as much as possible before breaking out the puffy coats, and the Instagram-worthy pictures double.

I love getting up in the morning and checking the weather to see what kind of day it will be, knowing that one day it can be a nice 50 degrees and 19 degrees with snow on the ground the next. The days can be unpredictable, but to me it is a surprise every day and keeps me on my toes. So far, I love this change in location and going through four seasons, but who knows where I will be next?

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
