My First Off-Campus Apartment

It's kind of hard to get used to living off campus, but it has its rewards!

Alright, so I've already told you about the seemingly million and a half things I had to do while preparing myself for moving back into school. But what I didn't know at the time was what living in an off-campus apartment would really feel like.

It's a little bit of a mix of feeling independent and being proud because I'm that independent now, and feeling super nervous and worried whenever I leave the apartment.

I feel super independent since I've had to constantly be in contact with our landlord for renovations over the summer, etc., gotten internet, figured out what kind of furniture I needed and how my roommate and I would split what we needed to bring. We didn't even have to go through the hassle of getting the keys to our place through residential services on campus, and could even move in earlier than those living on campus. We've decorated the whole place and made it feel much more homey than the first night I was here. We put our rugs down and rearranged the furniture to our liking and now we have a cute little place for ourselves!

However, living in an off-campus apartment means that there are a lot of extra things to worry about, too. Such as, we have to remember to consciously close and lock our door every time we leave, unlike the dorm rooms where they locked automatically and you didn't bother to think twice about it. And we are lucky in the sense that all of the people living in our building are students, but that's not necessarily the case in the buildings surrounding us on the street. If we have any kind of problem with our apartment, we have to go through our landlord to get things done, which is probably going to take a bit longer than the campus maintenance guys. We are also responsible for making sure our internet bills get paid and that we keep everything and everyone in our apartment safe.

So needless to say, life as a first time apartment leaser is kind of stressful, but it definitely has its perks to it too!

Being a part of any organization undoubtedly comes with the pitfalls of being grouped into negative stereotypes, and sororities are certainly no exception. Here are the top few things, that I find at least, are some of the most irritating misconceptions that find their way into numerous conversations...

8. "The whole philanthropy thing isn't real, right?"

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
