Melania Trump will not be joining her husband (President-elect Donald J.Trump) in the White House...just yet. Melania has opted to stay in New York with her son Barron until he finishes this school year. Though it has been the norm for the first lady and children to move into the White House right away- there is no law that states they have too.
Melania is sending a clear message that her role as a mom will come before her role as a first lady and that's not such a bad thing. She wants to keep her son's life as normal as possible, and I don't think that's negligent to her role as First Lady, after all- she didn't run for President and neither did Barron. Perhaps this denotes from societal expectations of the role of the First Family- but we have to remember that these are real people who have to make decisions that work best for their situation while trying to balance the expectations that come with being a part of the First Family.
Of course, her decision to stay in Trump Tower means higher security for her and Barron. "The building is going to become the White House of New York" says Jim Reese (former Delta Force commander), and while this may just go to fuel public ridicule of Trump's failure to separate his families empire from his job as President, I don't think wanting a fourth grader to be able to finish his school year really has anything to do that.
Granted, the presence of the secret service and high-end security in New York will likely cause crowding and traffic and general public annoyance, I think if we are going to criticize an aspect of Trump's Presidency, we should focus more on the faults of Donald Trump himself and not on what his family is doing.
