My First Impressions Skiing

It's cold and my body hurts, but I'm having fun.

I went skiing for the first time today, it was exciting, new, and interesting to participate in. I was fearful as I approached the site, I do not head into new, physical territory as easily as some others may. At some point, while waiting in line to retrieve my skiing gear, my fear left me and an excitement replaced it. These are a few things that went through my mind as I went skiing and when I reflected on the activity later on.

1. The temperature fluxation is hard to adapt to.

At first, it is cold, freezing really. Then it gets hot, then it gets cold. Then you want to shed all of your jackets and gloves. I stepped outside of the main lodge and awkwardly made my way to the bottom of the slope. I was absolutely freezing having gone from the heated building to the snowy outside. I started to ski and after about five minutes I wanted to take off my jackets and gloves. Then I got stuck on the lift for a mere second and the wind blew by; I got freezing even with my jackets on.

2. I hope I don't run into that person.

I, for the most part, didn't have too much trouble controlling myself. That being said, I cannot control the other people on the slopes. It didn't necessarily happen each and every time, but there were a few times when I would come down the hill at an accelerated pace and would nearly knock into a small child; I settled for turning so sharply that I landed on my side.

3. Oh my god, my body hurts.

I first began to notice the muscle exertion when I attempted to move myself using the poles. After a few minutes of that happening, I began to feel my biceps working. Then as I settled for a moment on the lift, I noticed that my thighs were working harder. After a few times going down the slope, I realised that my shins were sore. This kind of pain was kind of nice, however, for two reasons. The first being that I knew I was getting a workout and then second being that I was having fun.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.
