I don’t watch much television, but recently the television adaptation of the Archie comics came out on the CW. Remember those? Do you remember Betty and Veronica and Archie? As a kid, I really loved those comics. I remember getting some of them for free comic book day and flying through them in a couple of hours. I could never decide if I liked Betty or Veronica better. Anyway, back to the television show. The show is actually called "Riverdale," which is the name of the town where they all live. Oh yeah, and remember Cole Sprouse, from "The Suite Life of Zack and Cody"? He plays the one and only Jughead. Everyone else in the show is newer actors and actresses that I have never seen in anything else.
At its core, the show is a murder mystery. The first episode opens up with Riverdale superstar Jason Blossom dead in the river. At first, they don’t know what happens to him. Officials still don’t know after the first four episodes, but they do find out that instead of drowning, he was shot through the forehead. All the small town turmoil is really gripping and the show is beautifully shot. At the end of each episode, I have been hooked and waiting to know more. It makes me remember how high school was full of bitter people.
As the show has progressed so far, there are more questions than answers. Who killed Jason Blossom? Why is Archie having an affair with his music teacher? Who actually is his music teacher? This was a subplot for the first couple of episodes but I’m convinced that her story arc isn’t over. She seems to be an integral part of the story and I’m interested in seeing where this goes.
Overall, I’ve really enjoyed the first four episodes of the CW’s "Riverdale."I thought the fact that they paired a classic story with a new murder mystery twist was really refreshing (although I might be biased because I love murder mysteries). If you’re looking for something new to watch I highly recommend "Riverdale"! It was so much fun to see all my favorite characters come to life, and I can’t wait to see where the television takes this story.
