My First Hurricane Experience

The amazingly accurate way that Chris Pratt described my first hurricane preparation.

My First Hurricane Experience

Hurricanes are destructive storms that have devastating impacts, and this country has sadly seen some of their horrible effects. But some people are more accustomed to the hurricanes, because they’ve lived in areas where hurricane forces are expected. They have a better understanding of where to go, what to have, and what to do in preparation for a hurricane - I’m not one of those people. I’m from Texas. Yes, the Gulf of Mexico is right there. But no, I’ve never experienced a hurricane or any sort of hurricane preparation because my city is too inland to be reached with the heavy damaging aspects that these storms bring. There's one storm that I can definitely prepare for and that's a tornado. I can prepare like a boss for a tornado because I’ve experienced a tornados path more than once. So I know how to tough it out during tornado time. But hurricanes are a different type of storm that I’ve never encountered. I’m hoping that the mental and physical preparation is a little similar, but I'm still freaking out on the inside.

I’m attending college in Maryland now, and I'm starting to live the East Coast life. That life includes being prepared during hurricane season. Of course I see the devastating hurricanes shown on the news whenever one strikes the United States, but they’ve never been a great concern of mine. They’ve NEVER been a great concern of mine. Until now. Previously, I've only been concerned for the other lives at stake, but never the thought of my own being, in some sort of danger. The East Coast has been anticipating the arrival of Hurricane Joaquin, and I’m getting quite nervous. I made my first ever hurricane preparation kit, and I hope that I won’t be needing it. Even if Joaquin doesn't make direct landfall, we're expected to experience a lot of wind and rain. So here are a few of the thoughts that I've had during this hurricane preparation, explained through Chris Pratt reactions.

1. Initially hearing that a hurricane might be headed our way.

2. When my roommate tells me that she's been through multiple hurricanes.

3. After being told to start preparing for the storm.

4. Learning that the hurricane might not hit Maryland.

5. Then being told that it actually might, so I need to keep preparing.

5. When my friends from back home text me about how I'm doing.

Needless to say, the Hurricane Joaquin situation has been one of the most frightening situations that I've dealt with in a while. But I'm thankfully going through it with the support of the wonderful people around me. If anyone is ever having similar feelings to the ones that I've had during this hurricane preparation, then know that you're not alone. I may not be able to give you any direction, but I can definitely empathize with you!

an image of taylor swift standing center stage surrounded by her backup dancers in elegant peacock esque outfits with a backdrop of clouds and a box rising above the stage the image captures the vibrant aesthetics and energy of her performance during the lover era of her eras tour

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
