This November our great nation is going to go out and vote for our next president and for the first time in history there will be a woman on the ballot. Love her or hate her Hillary Clinton’s nomination has raised some pretty groundbreaking questions for this country one of them being: if she were to be elected what would change about the Office of the First Lady?
Despite many members of the press claiming that the historic position of First Lady would drastically change with the election of Hillary Clinton, I beg to differ. The office of the First Lady has been one filled with brave, intelligent, and accomplished women since its birth with Martha Washington, and has continued be filled with exceptional women ever since. While former President Clinton will bring a new twist to the office, he would just be adding to the excellence and power that have come before him.
The women of the White House have served as Presidential advisers to their husbands for decades and have even gone as far as taking over the Oval when necessary. Edith Wilson all but was the president after her husband, Woodrow Wilson, suffered a stroke. Nancy Reagan is said to have been a major influence during her husbands two terms, even more so in the second due to his budding Alzheimer's. It would come as no surprise if Clinton were to offer his advice to his wife, who has already publicly stated that she would welcome any advice he gave.
First Ladies have even adopted their own causes to take charge of. Hillary Clinton was an activist for women’s rights and healthcare while her husband was in office, while Laura Bush decided to tackle childhood literacy and Michelle Obama worked to end childhood obesity. Perhaps Mr. Clinton can work on his clean water initiative from the East Wing.
While a man holding the East Wing office is something new, if given the opportunity Mr. Clinton will surely have big shoes to fill.
