First And Foremost, Love Yourself

“Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is youer than you." –Dr. Seuss

First And Foremost, Love Yourself

Independent. This word can be used in so many different contexts, but what does it mean? Does it mean not having to rely on others, or is it having the ability to be confident in your own skin? Perhaps it’s having the internal strength to generate your own happiness.

Human nature invites high dependency on others, and, in some ways, this level of dependency causes more harm than good. If you don’t take time to know and develop yourself, you could be depriving yourself of so many great things. There’s strength in loving yourself. There’s strength in knowing yourself.

It’s funny how fast life can change, and how quickly you will need to be able to be self-sufficient. Don’t ever lose sight of yourself, because one day, you may be left alone, even when you least expect it. There will be times in life that make you feel completely isolated, with nobody but yourself to rely on. Accepting this cold, hard fact isn’t easy, and finding yourself can prove to be just as difficult. Emotions can play games with your mind, but you can’t let them stop you. Inner strength builds inner beauty, which will carry you through the hard parts in life. Know your strengths and be able to learn from your weaknesses, because that is the only way for you to truly improve yourself.

It is important to take time for yourself and reflect on personal progression. Whether it be writing in a journal or listening to your favorite music, self-mediation is important, especially after a tough obstacle in your life. Don't be hesitant to give yourself some time to grow, and remember that with every trial that "this too shall pass." Be your own person and seize the opportunity to become anyone you want to be. Become the person you have always wanted to become--there's nobody stopping you. You are beautiful, you are capable, and you are worth it. It’s a cliché phrase, but you are worth it. You deserve to be happy in your own skin, and completely independent, never relying on someone else. You are enough.

It’s not wise to put your happiness in the hands of another person. Having confidence in yourself is key. You need confidence in order to be your own person. Dependency can cause you to invest too much of yourself into one person, which can be taken from you in one second.

Remember that you are never alone. The confidence you find in yourself is invaluable, but you must to take the necessary steps to build it. Remember, in both good times and bad, you must love yourself before anyone else can love you. Once you realize that, you will be on the fast track to happiness. You can do it.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
