First Day of College

When it comes to being a college freshman, there are a few things that are likely to happen on the first day; these things can happen to you or to one of your friends that you have made. All the other freshman are in the same boat as you as they are trying to just survive past the first day, which eventually will turn into surviving the first week and then in the blink of an eye, the first year will be over. But, I'm thinking I'm getting a little bit ahead of myself; let's just focus on the first day for this article. I have ran into many people that have told me a few funny stories about things that have happened on their first day.

1. Going to the Wrong Classroom

It's common for people to not know where they are going to not know which room they have to go for the class they are attending. I remember running into a freshman that I knew before the first day of school began and they told me that they walked into the wrong room. He told me that it was slightly embarrassing and I told him that it's a normal thing to happen. Most freshman don't know where everything is and it's the first year where they become to everything that's located on campus.

2. Making New Friends

Learning something new about someone that you may not have known before is a wonderful way to start a first day. I remember this past year that I had the chance to help out some freshman get used to the university life because of welcome weekend. That helped me meet a few new people that I began to know more as the school year started for all of us. I got to know how everything was going for them and I reminded them that they could contact me if they ever needed help with anything throughout the year.

3. Meeting the Professors

With new classes that a student has to attend, the results usually end up in meeting fellow classmates and meeting the actual professor. This is one of the essential things for a student to keep in mind on the first day because it'll give the student a chance to see what kind of teacher they are. This can alternately be done by looking at the syllabus to see what is coming up for the class in terms of assignments and projects. It's key to pay attention to what materials that the teacher uses so they could teach the material in an effective manner, so it's important to keep these ideas in mind.

4. Joining A New Club or Organization

There might be a day during the first week of classes where all of the clubs show off what they have to offer. Their main mission is to get new people interested in that particular club or organization so they can gain some new members. It's good for the incoming students to see what other activities they have to offer to the students because that way, they'll never be bored. The variety of clubs that are offered on a particular college campus really do vary, it's just up to that individual student to decide whether or not they really want to participate.

5. Buying Any Last Minute Materials

After the first week of classes are finally done with, students may need to rethink if they need additional supplies or books. During that month or two before school starts, most students are given a list of some of the books that they need. However, plans do change and the professor may tell their students that they really don't need those books after all. It could mean that the books aren't really necessary or it could be that they just ordered the wrong books. It's also a good chance for students to get more pens, pencils, notebooks and binders. If one has the right materials, then they will be starting up on the right path to do well for the upcoming school year.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
