Ready Or Not

Hello August!

Ready Or Not

Ah, August!

Congratulations –– you have made it to August, which means quite a few things. The biggest being that school is about to start whether you like it or not. In a few days we will be moving on campus or getting ready for the first day of classes, yet again. During the summer we have all the time in the world to sit and watch movies, go out and eat until our hearts are content, and do everything else our hearts desire; however, when school starts back up we will have less time to do all of the above.

For college freshmen it is now the beginning of the rest of your life. There are so many things that will begin to happen during this time.

If you have not already set up your schedule for classes do your parents and yourself a favor and do not take any classes that start at 8 a.m. I promise it will help you a lot. I know you believe that since you were already in school by 8 a.m. that this will not be an issue, but if you are awake all night trying to finish a paper and you have a 8 a.m. class that next morning you will understand. You will also make new friends and majority of the people you hung out with in high school you may no longer talk to about halfway through the school year.

For everyone else this is just another year we have to get through to get one step closer to graduation day. Majority of us are probably counting down the days, months, or years until we can walk across that stage in our caps and gowns ready to take on the world. For most of us the school year will bring on new experiences and opportunities that will last us a lifetime. We will learn so much about ourselves because we will be on our own. At first things may seem hard, professors expect much more than our high school teachers did, and due dates just sneak up on you. 11:59 p.m. is not a joke and if you are even a minute late your professor just may not accept your assignment.

So, ready or not, you have made it to the day the rest of your life starts. You will have great days and horrible ones, but the best thing to do is to stay positive. Also, remember to have fun, to focus and to always stay true to yourself!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
