My First College Experience

What comes after high school? If I'm not mistaken, I believe it is college. For the most part, people graduate from high school, then attend college for the next two-four years to pursue the career they are interested in. The amount of things I've seen during college was amazing, disgusting, and disorienting. It changed me as an individual and how I see perceive people in different ways. To never judge a book by its cover because you never know how that person's past ever was until they reveal it for you. I feel as if college gave me more knowledge and the study tips I've gathered together were astonishing. My experience as a freshman was short and really taught me to never slack in college no matter how good or bad you are doing. I've come so far in my life that I saw some work as easy as throwing out garbage in the night. People used to try to put me down and say you, "would not be able to get that GPA or that homework is too hard for you." Never let anyone put you down no matter where you came from or the situation you are in, those people who say those things are "haters" waiting to see you fail.

During freshman year went to only one party and I completely disliked it because of the heat, atmosphere, and actions that were done. I did not go to a party after that and it benefited me in the long run. I have friends here to support me when things are not going well for me and other situations that I may not be able to handle. People wonder why I do not drink or smoke, but in reality, it is because of my mindset and personal conflicts. As a freshman during college, I was a quiet kid who chose not to talk due to social dilemmas that I was experiencing with and how I perceived others may think of me. I realized as the weeks and months went on, those people in college really just wanted to make friends; so why not talk to people I seen frequently and were in my proximity. I was the kid who walked with his headphones and passed everyone in my class without saying hi. Anti-social may be a closer word to how my personality was portrayed during my freshman year.

Freshman year taught me that hard work pays off and will change you as a person either slightly or drastically. It can change you physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually, but realistically only you can change you, no one else should be able to do that for you. I went from a 2.6 GPA first semester to a 3.3 GPA in the second semester. It was a drastic change and my perspective changed drastically. I would just thank my family, friends, and God for always being on my side.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
