iOS 10 was released September 13, 2016. Everyday I feel like I'm finding something that was different from previous versions. I'm a little late on this topic, only because I constantly am finding these new details.
Emojis. We love them. Why wouldn't we? They make our texts seem more personable and fun. With iOS 10, we have been given the gift of several great new emojis (like the single parent families, the female runner and swimmer, etc), along with revisions of our all-time favorites.
While it's far-fetched to say this particular emoji is a favorite to many, the emoji revision that I have a problem with is the gun. Wait, no. Now it's a green squirt gun. My issue is that the old pistol emoji was changed to a toy gun emoji, which I can assume is because of gun violence.
Which is nuts. I would love to see a study that can correlate gun violence to a freaking emoji. I get violent video games and such that can increase gun violence and general violence, but a sticker that someone adds to a text? Now that's far-fetched.
Let me just say that I am in no means anti-gun control. Personally, I believe there does need to be more regulations but the Second Amendment was put in the Constitution for a reason and I do not think there is a need to rid of guns completely. There is a real problem of violence in our country. Not just gun violence. People use all sorts of weapons or even their bare hands. Yet, after several stabbings no one is trying to take away our knives.
Which brings me to my last point. No other weapon emojis have been discarded or changed. There's knives, swords, a bomb. So why change the gun emoji?
The old pistol emoji got fired for what, being too aggressive? Soon enough the squirt gun will be thrown out because people can drown in water.
