Unless you are currently residing beneath a rock, chances are you have heard of the incredibly cute hippo named Fiona. The young hippo was born six weeks prematurely last January at the Cincinnati Zoo, since then the Zoo has gained an immense amount of social media exposure. Since the passing of one of their gorillas named Harambe last May, the zoo has had little down-time when it comes to its social media presence. Although Fiona's viral story is a happy one, it raises the question of what it is that makes this particular hippo so special?
From the "Boomers" to "Generation Y," Fiona has reached the hearts of millions across the nation. The zoo launched a t-shirt campaign last February in hopes that sales would help fund the expenses that result from caring for the hippo. Additionally, the zoo tweets updates on her progress on a near daily basis. With so much repeated exposure, it comes as no surprise that Fiona is a consistent trending topic. Although she is Cincinnati royalty now, it is questionable whether or not she will continue to hold this title.
In today's fast-paced world, something may be a hot topic one day and old news the next. It is impossible to argue that Fiona isn't adorable but once she reaches adulthood she will no longer be the cute and tiny hippo she is today. Most things in our lives are not permanent. Trends are what dominate our society today, and trust me when I tell you, Fiona is just that. Everybody loves the tiny, prematurely born hippo. How could they not? Throughout this country's history, the stories that people enjoy most are the feel-good, underdog stories. The person or animal that has the odds stacked against them, but they beat those odds in order win or, in this case, survive. Whether it's Rocky, Rudy, or the Little Engine That Could, the people always have and always will eat those stories up.
The next in line for their underdog story was Fiona. This incredibly small, cute, premature hippo captivated the people on her quest to survival, but let me ask you, what happens when Fiona becomes full grown? She will be thrown to the wayside for another smaller, cuter animal. I mean have you seen hippos at the zoo? Nobody is ever like, "Oh wow, look how cute that giant hippo is." People enjoy small things like newborn babies, kittens and puppies. There is a reason why most animals who are put up for adoption or dropped off at shelters are typically older. Once the kitten or puppy is fully grown, they lose that appeal and are no longer wanted or seen as "cute." Although this is not always the case, it is hard to deny this harsh reality.
Fiona better enjoy her fame now, because it isn't going to last much longer. She is already starting to be overshadowed by the newborn giraffe at the zoo. So I implore you, people, please get over your obsession with this hippo because you're just leading her on. Pretty soon you will all leave her for the next cute animal that is born. Who deserves better? Fiona.
