5 Ways To Finish Out The Semester Strong

In This Article:

I think at this point in the semester we're all dragging our feet.

The sun is shining, summer is coming and you're tired of working. You've probably already scheduled your classes for next semester, and it feels like you should be done, right?

Wrong.

We've still got several weeks before we can spend our days doing nothing and enjoying the break. So I'm here to tell you how to get your life (a little) together to finish out the semester.

 Write in your planner

You know that one that you probably bought around the New Year because you KNEW this was going to be your year. Or the one that you bought at the beginning of the school year and haven't opened since September.

Grab that one.

You might feel like you've got your life together, but writing out your plans and goals during the week and month will allow you to better remember your many responsibilities and make you feel like you're living your best life.

And there's no better feeling than adding fun stickers to a planner.

 Change your scenery

I love my apartment, but if I have to stare out of the same window by my desk one more time I might just lose it. Going to a coffee shop or a bookstore will give you a much-needed change of scenery. At this point, you're tired of the same routine, so switch it up by trying somewhere new. You'll be more productive, and there's nowhere to nap (hopefully).

Go for a walk/run

Now I am not one of those people that avoids doing things through exercising. If nothing else, I'm avoiding exercise by doing other things.

But the weather is just too pretty to pass up, and vitamin D will get you going. If I do one thing out of my normal routine, I normally feel more prepared to conquer whatever else I want to do during the day.

You don't realize how much you miss being outside until you're back out there. Take a walk, jog or run and then tackle that paper or quiz.

Go to that review session

At this point in the semester, you know what to expect from your classes. You know which class needs work and which one you can slack off in. You know the one that requires attendance and which one the professor just reads off the slides.

These thoughts are limiting your potential.

That class you have a B or C in could probably get boosted with a visit to a professor or tutor. Not only will the professor finally know who you are, but you're expanding your confidence and ability.

It's never too late to try to improve your grades.

Be gentle with yourself

This one is the most important. At this point in the semester, I definitely know I'm not doing the best I can. I wonder why I can't study as much for tests, maintain focus or worry about my grades. But sometimes you're regular 100% can only go up to 80%, and that's OK. Don't feel guilty for the days you take off or the opportunities missed — these will just drag you down further. Instead, give yourself the grace to do the best you can, while accepting that's not the best you can be.

Sending you all the warmth and focus you need!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
