I Found My Passion, You Can Too

Hailey Harkins (Myself)

Finding your passion in life can often be a rather difficult task. The passions you have can be an abundance of things, as for myself, I have a lot. Photography, Singing, helping people, being involved in many things and Special education teaching. Throughout my life, I have thought about many career paths that normally branch from one of my favorite TV shows. With Grey's Anatomy, I wanted to be an Orthopedic Surgeon, Criminal minds, a Profiler for the BAU, and finally to follow in my Father's footsteps and become a nurse. Honestly, none of those are where my hearts at. During my Junior year of high school, I found myself taking one of the most rewarding classes I have ever taken in my academic career.

At Hartland High School, we had a class titled Peer to Peer support. In this class, we immigrated to General education students and students with a difference in the same class. We were assigned a student to work with for half the semester we took them to there classes, helped them with their work, but most importantly made a new friend. This is not a class you see in every school which is rather upsetting. Within this class, I made some of my best friends and I found my passion in Special Education Teaching.

Special Education Teaching, is not only one of my favorite things to talk about but it is the most rewarding job there is. This job is most definitely not for everyone, There is a lot of patience and dedication that comes with the job. You are a major part of that child's support system, along with his/her family, friends, doctors and other administrators.

During my junior year of high school, there was a certain student that I ate lunch with whenever I could. This happened to be Heck week for drama club, he and I were eating lunch and just messing around like usual, and he was laughing so much about the simplest thing and that's when I knew that I wanted to do this job for the rest of my life.

When you're at a crossroad about what you are passionate about, nobody ever said I can only do that one passion because as of today I am majoring in special education teaching and photography. Do what makes your heart sing like mine does every day.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
