As young adults, the pressures being placed on us about what our life and career is going to entail are unavoidable. Even in high school, we're constantly being hounded: "Where are you going to school?" and, "What do you want to do after college?"
The harsh reality is that very few of us really know what we want to do for the rest of our lives, and we shouldn't! Don't get me wrong, I do think it's something we should all have in the back of our minds, but it is completely okay to not truly know.
Life is going to teach us who we really are as people, and what we once thought would be our ideal career, might not be. New situations and circumstances are going to bring us new ideas and we will change our minds time and time again. That's okay.
We think that we should be able to just know what we want to do with our lives coming out of high school or even college. We might have our ideas, but those are bound to change, and if they don't, good for you, you're pretty lucky.
I believe the most influential thing that will really help us figure out what we want to do is life. The experiences we are going to have, the people we meet, the things we learn and see— these are what will truly help us figure it out.
So you think you want to be a doctor, then you realize you really don't like needles. Or you recognize you really care about the wellbeing of others less fortunate. You're learning about yourself and what will possibly satisfy you for the rest of your life.
Something to remember, though, is that things will change. You may find something that you believe is right up your alley, something that you'd really enjoy, then to realize it might not be a realistic idea. This is one of the life experiences that will leave you confused and feeling like you just need to know, but it will help teach you what it is you need to truly find what you want.
People, who at one point in their lives, knew they wanted to do something even change their minds. Switching careers completely is not unheard of, and hopefully it helps people to truly find their life's passions.
So although you think you have to know, right now, always remember life will lead you in the direction you are meant to go. Don't sweat it if something doesn't go as planned or your feelings towards something change. Trust that this will teach you the things you needed to learn and keep moving forward.
Life is going to happen, you will get where you are supposed to be. Just remember to always be patient, and whatever it is that you are facing, find the lesson in it. You will understand yourself and where it is you really want to be before you know it.
