What Happens When You Find Your Best Friends At College
Kelsey Smith

It's not everyday that you stumble into a core group of amazing friends at college within your first semester. I was one of the lucky ones. Here is what happens when you find your best friends at college:

1. You gain sisters you never had before.

Having people at school that you can instill a level of trust in that you would only give to your own family changes the game in so many ways. To be able to call your friends your "sisters" proves just how much love and respect you have for them. And who wouldn't want to have a "family" away from home.

2. You build a safety net.

Best friends are people you can lean on, go to for support, vent to, and be available for when they need the same. Having best friends at college means having people who are always there to offer advice, words of wisdom, a helping hand, or a shoulder to cry on. Which all can be very helpful given the stress of college. They will always have your back, just like you have theirs.

3. You've found people who have seen you at your worst and still accept you as if you're at your best.

We all break down sometimes whether it be from family problems, school stress, breakups, or just because life got to be too much. It is in these moments where you feel like you're at your lowest that having best friends is priceless. They'll lift you up and get you back on your feet again without a moment of judgement.

4. You never have to be alone.

We all know the awkwardness of walking back to the dorm from class alone or shamefully showing up to the dorm in the early morning, and having best friends to laugh it off with or facetime you through the pain is always a big help. Living with your best friends is one of the best things you will ever experience.

5. You make sacrifices for each other.

Whether it be waiting an extra hour to eat dinner because your friend is still in lab or adding an extra 10 minutes into your walk to class so you can cross paths for just a few seconds, you find people willing to go out of their way for you.

6. You find good influences.

While your friends are there to have a good time with, you know you have found your best friends when they're willing to put their foot down and stop you from doing something reckless or stupid.

7. You value each other.

The best part of having a group of best friends is knowing that each person is there for a reason and contributes a valuable piece of their personality to the group to make it what it is. You're thankful for each and every person.

While not everyone may find their best friends right away, I can tell you from personal experience that it is the most amazing feeling when you do that no value could possibly be put on.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.

Working with the public can be a job, in and of itself. Some people are just plain rude for no reason. But regardless of how your day is going, always having to be in the best of moods, or at least act like it... right?

1. When a customer wants to return a product, hands you the receipt, where is printed "ALL SALES ARE FINAL" in all caps.

2. Just because you might be having a bad day, and you're in a crappy mood, doesn't make it okay for you to yell at me or be rude to me. I'm a person with feelings, just like you.

3. People refusing to be put on hold when a customer is standing right in front of you. Oh, how I wish I could just hang up on you!

RBF, or resting b*tch face, is a serious condition that many people suffer from worldwide. Suffers are often bombarded with daily questions such as "Are you OK?" and "Why are you so mad?" If you have RBF, you've probably had numerous people tell you to "just smile!"
