Finding Time For You

Relaxing should be on our to-do list.

This semester was supposed to be a lighter load for me, that way I could concentrate on getting back to a healthy mind and body. I only took twelve credit hours, the mininmum to remain a full- time student. Along with my four classes, I work twenty-one hours a week and write for Odyssey at NC State. The rest of my time is spread thin amongst homework, chores, and a list of adult responsibilities that never seem to go away. I hardly have any time to give to myself. Relaxing is important and often therapeutic, but you don’t want to find yourself in a relaxation rut.

A relaxation rut is when you ALWAYS do the same thing when you get time to relax. Mine is watching "The Office." I have seen the show eight times through and counting. When I do this, I limit my relaxation. The more you change up your relaxation techniques, the less bored you will be.

Relaxing 2.0.

First things first, find time for only you. There is a difference between relaxing with your boyfriend or bros compared to being alone.

I have found relaxation in my new diet and health regiment. For my sweet tooth, I have been using dark chocolate to cover various fruits, and I got about as much joy from making the treats as from eating them. There was something cathartic about bettering myself in a fun delicious way.

Painting is one of my favorite ways to relax. I feel like a scientist, figuring out the best way for the colors to mix. You get small victories from painting like getting the watercolors to fade like you want to, and it is nice to feel like a winner. I suggest going to a Wine and Design, either by yourself or with a few quiet friends. Go on a night when you have the studio to yourself. Paint in that silence, alcohol is optional, and feel like an artist.

Now that the weather is starting to become agreeable, I wish to start taking walks and enjoy the sunshine. Walking puts you on an island, just for yourself and your thoughts. Walk yourself like a dog and feel free from worry. Bring your dog with you! Once I figure out how to successfully walk a cat then my feline friend will be walking alongside me.

And after that nice long walk, take a bath! Baths are not for everyone -- some think they are gross, but once you rinse off in the shower, a bath is an amazing, relaxing idea. You can pimp your bath with bubbles, salts, candles, bath bombs, champagne, and music of your choice to tie it all together. Let the bath melt your troubles away. Relax your neck and loosen your shoulders, let the hot water surround you. Then exit the bath like a rebirth. A new you has emerged, and you can take on anything.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
