Recovering from substance abuse is a difficult ordeal that can take a lot of energy and willpower. It can be hard to maintain the strength to recover throughout the treatment process, but it'll be worth it in the end. Here are a few tips to consider when you find things are getting difficult.

Be Nice to Yourself

You may be feeling bad about yourself or your drug addiction. However, it is important for you to be kind to yourself. You may have setbacks during this process, but you have to keep pushing forward. One bad day does not equal failure.

Focus on the Positive Things

If you have started getting treatment for substance abuse, then you are already taking steps in the right direction. It may take you a long time to get to the place that you want to be. However, you should focus on the positive things that are happening right now. The way that you think will influence your behavior.

Celebrate Your Achievements

Recovery is a journey. There are many steps that you will have to take in order to get there. You shouldn't just focus on the end goal. You should celebrate the numerous achievements that you make along the way. There is no such thing as an achievement that is too small to count, especially if you find yourself in need of a pick-me-up.

Recognize Your Struggles

You have to be honest about the ordeal that you are going through. You should identify the struggles that you have and find ways to cope with them. You should also talk to your counselors about ways that you can deal with these struggles and live a better lifestyle.

Your counselors can help you make the necessary changes so that you stay on the right track. They can also help you develop healthy habits that can help you find meaning and purpose in your life.

Do Not Make Comparisons

There are millions of people who are dealing with addiction. However, no one has the same story. They are also on their own unique journey. Comparison can make it difficult for you to focus on your own recovery. You may feel bad because you are not progressing at the same rate as someone else is, or you see their story as more "worthy" of the struggle you're all going through. Neither of these things is healthy or beneficial. That is why you should avoid comparing yourself to other people and instead focus on yourself.

Finding the strength to recover from an addiction is one of the most difficult things that you will do in your life. You can make this journey easier by being nice to yourself and focusing on the positive things. Furthermore, you should recognize your struggles and avoid making comparisons to other people who are battling addiction.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
