Finding The Meadow

It's a trip worth taking.

If you venture out one day, look for the meadow. Follow the melody of your favorite song until you find the path that is sometimes made by two rows of trees. The meadow lies where the sky and ground meet, where the stars sometimes touch the flowers, or where the water meets the sunset. The meadow can be filled with the most beautiful flowers in all colors, and together they sometimes dance with the cool breeze that sways you with the same melodies that got you to this point.

However, it isn’t until you reach the center of this meadow that the magic of this once kept secret takes its full effect. Once you have walked to the center point of this meadow, be sure to look back, for you’ll find that the way in which you came is no longer there. The path of trees is certainly still there, so that if you choose to leave, you’ll know the way. Other than that, the meadow’s dome fully surrounds you, sunshine seeming to shine down from all around, but every time you search for it the sun is always in your view, never in front of you.

At this point you may turn away from the tree path, facing forward and walking to what appears to be a cliff. Go towards it, and what you see will explain why I say that sometimes there are stars rather than suns. Or why there is sometimes water rather than flowers. This meadow is sometimes never a meadow at all. Once it was a beach, calm waves and a sky full of stars. Another time it was doorway to a castle, but for you, for anyone really… this place will never be the same.

Now, look down near the edge of that cliff. Are there footprints? Pawprints? Perhaps a note or a small toy. Follow the footprints, but have no fear, you won’t fall off this cliff or drown in the water. You are safe here. Pay attention to what you find and continue forward. Keep walking until you reach the fog. Stop. Don’t move into the fog. Just wait, and with time the fog might disappear. It may turn to into sparkly dust. It may become snowflakes. Regardless, once it clears look closely.

This is when you’ll see them.

I can’t tell you who you’ll see or how they might look exactly, but I can tell you that whoever shows up is someone who you love very much, someone who loves you very much. Whoever you find at the meadow will be someone who needed to see you one more time, in a beautiful setting like the one you’ll find. Take a deep breath and enjoy the moment. When you’re ready… the trees will guide you back.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week.
