Life sometimes can get so hectic that people can forget to relax, or think they don't have time to wind down. Having good relaxation time is extremely beneficial to your health, and yes, there is time in the day for it (even if it's just lying in your bed for a bit before you fall asleep). Luckily, there are breaks during the school year, such as this lovely spring break. Sometimes it seems like these breaks can't come soon enough. In times like these, try these different techniques to help you chill out and give your mind a little vacation.
Play your favorite video game.
I just took a break from the daily grind of college by playing a few stages of "Kirby Super Star." It's not my all-time favorite game, but it's Kirby, so it's pretty doggone close. However, if you are stressed because you have a lot on your plate, make sure you only play for a little while -- no more than an hour. Playing too long can cause you to fall behind, only worsening your anxiety down the road. Sometimes, taking just 30 minutes to play a pointless video game is exactly what you need to give your brain a break.
Watch your favorite TV show or movie.
Even if you're beyond stressed with studying for a few upcoming midterms, taking some time to watch an episode of your favorite TV show isn't going to kill you. Depending on how much time you have, a movie isn't a bad idea either. Giving your brain a break from cramming for exams may actually help you in the long run, giving your brain time to absorb and store all that information before it's forced to learn more. Also, If you're like me and want to write stories and work in TV and film, this actually is directly related to your career and can serve as a form of inspiration!
Take a walk.
Especially with the weather starting to warm up, taking a walk can help clear your mind exceptionally well. Walks through nature and forests are a common activity, but if you prefer walking on a city sidewalk, taking in the variety of noises and sights is also a very nice experience if you're in the mood for it.
Listen to your favorite music.
It's your favorite for a reason! And sometimes we forget things like this in the midst of the tornado of responsibility. So remembering a favorite song and listening to it will help shift your mood from anxious to a little more relaxed, happy, and maybe even inspired!
Practice breathing exercises.
The breathing pattern 4, 6, 7, 8 is proven to be the most relaxing and beneficial breathing exercise to relax. Breathe in for a count of 4, out for 6, in for 7, then out for 8. Repeat until you fall into a coma (not really, just until you feel like stopping).
Pet dogs (unless you're allergic).
It's extremely difficult to be stressed when you have an adorable puppy licking your face. Plus, you'll probably make the dog's day as well. Just look at that dog in the picture -- it's like, "There are so many people petting me right now, I bet you're so jelly." If you don't have a pet, a trip to your local pet shop or shelter or one of those cafés with animals will supply you with plenty of stress-free animal love.
As long as you practice good time management, these great ways to relax will help you be even more focused and productive with your daily responsibilities when you get back to work. So next time you feel like ripping your hair out, stop for a moment, and consider doing some of these relaxation activities. You'll thank yourself later.
