If you follow the entertainment world, you know that two notable things happened this week. First, there is "Finding Dory," which came to theaters this weekend, 13 years after the original, "Finding Nemo." Second, Twitter was blowing up with news that Taylor Swift was seen getting cuddly with Tom Hiddleston, two weeks after breaking a 15-month relationship with Calvin Harris. After hours of deciding which topic I wanted to write about, I thought, hey, why not combine the two? So, it is my honor to present "Finding Nemo" characters if they were Taylor Swift songs.
1. Nemo: "Fifteen"
Why: "Fifteen" is about being young and feeling like you know everything in the world, when in reality, you really don't. Nemo, who isn't quite 15, is still a young fish and does not know much about the dangers of the ocean. This eventually leads him to being captured by a diver.
Notable Lyric: "Wish you could go back and tell yourself what you know now."
2. Marlin: "Change"
Why: "Change" is all about having the odds against you and overcoming them. It is about never giving up and fighting for what you want. Marlin had very little chance of finding his little son in an enormous ocean. He faced many obstacles and could have easily called it quits, but he didn't. Through hard work and determination, he eventually found Nemo. (spoiler)
Notable Lyric: "Tonight we'll stand, get off our knees
Fight for what we've worked for all these years
And the battle was long, it's the fight of our lives
But we'll stand up champions tonight."
3. Dory: "Shake it Off"
Why: "Shake It Off" is about not letting negativity and what others are saying about you bother you. It is about being yourself and having fun. Dory, who has short-term memory loss, is a very special fish. You can tell that she is a social outcast, which does not bother her or stop her from making new friends. Her positivity is overwhelming despite her circumstances.
Notable Lyric: "I stay up too late, got nothing in my brain,
That's what people say, that's what people say."
4. Bruce: "Blank Space"
Why: Taylor Swift wrote "Blank Space" in the point of view of the Taylor Swift the media portrays: a serial dater who is emotional, clingy and crazy. The song starts out pretty innocent, but by the second verse, she goes completely psychotic. This is the same with how we see Bruce. When Marlin and Dory meet Bruce and his two friends, he appears to be a laid-back, jolly, vegetarian Shark. But, when his instincts kick in at the smell of blood, he turns into a mindless, fish-eating Shark.
Notable Lyric: "Screaming, crying, perfect storms
I can make all the tables turn."
5. Crush: "22"
Why: "22" was a memorable year for Taylor. She has said in interviews that at 22, you still don't know everything, but you know enough and start living your life. The song "22" highlights this in a fun, carefree way. Crush, who is not 22 but rather 150, has this chill, go-with-the-flow (or, in this case, the East Australian Current) attitude. We can tell that he is carefree and lives life the way he wants.
Notable Lyric: "We're happy, free, confused and lonely in the best way."
6. Gill: "I Know Places"
Why: "I Know Places" explains the difficulty Taylor has when trying to carry out a relationship when paparazzi and the media are always following her around. She wants to be free from the paparazzi and not be found. Gill, who is trapped in the dentist's tank, wants his freedom. He tries everything to get out.
Notable Lyric: "Baby, I know places we won't be found
And they'll be chasing their tails tryin' to track us down."
7. Nigel: "Safe and Sound"
Why: "Safe and Sound," which was written for "The Hunger Games," is about, well, being safe and sound. This lullaby is kind of bittersweet, because the narrator of the song will do anything she can for who she is singing to, despite the war that is going on in the world. Nigel, a pelican, meets Nemo in the dentist tank after hearing about his dad's story. You can tell that he genuinely wants Nemo to be reunited with his dad, for he helps Marlin and Dory fight the vicious seagulls and brings them to Nemo's tank.
Notable Lyric: "You'll be alright,
No one can hurt you now
Come morning light
You and I'll be safe and sound."
8. Seagulls: "Mine"
Why: Pretty self-explainable
Notable Lyrics: "Mine."
9. Darla: "I Knew You Were Trouble"
Why: "I Knew You Were Trouble" is about knowing someone is not good for you from the beginning and still pursuing a relationship. You knew that they were going to leave you heartbroken, so you blame yourself. Darla is the dentist's niece and is also a fish killer. In simple terms, we knew she was trouble when she walked in.
Notable Lyric: "I knew you were trouble when you walked in."
