Why Finding A Job In A College Town Is So Hard

Finding a job is definitely easier said than done.

All college students can agree on one thing for sure: We are broke. Ramen noodles, rice, peas, various (free) plastic cups from random places, Natty Light and much more are staples of the home of college students all across the country. Anything else that is cheap, or even better, FREE, can be thrown into the mix as well.

While some college students do not attempt to try and get jobs while they are at school, there is a large amount of students that do. It is definitely easier said than done, though. Endless applications are filled out, occasional interviews are scheduled and tears are shed when students are still broke. The process sucks, to say the least, and there are multiple reasons one may not get a job in their college town.

Hometown Employees

Everyone that goes to college in their hometown automatically has an advantage. They either already have a job around school or are more likely to get hired because they will still be home over breaks and for the summer. Us out-of-towners are usually out of luck, since most establishments would rather an employee that can work all year round, not just while school is in session.

More Qualified Candidates

Forget trying to add more variety to your resume. Did you work at a restaurant back home? Good luck trying to get that job at the boutique you love to window shop at. As college students, we should be expanding our areas of expertise. This comes with employers understanding that, though, and giving us the chance to try something that we may not have experience in.

Scheduling

Working around a college schedule is difficult. A student may have two classes in the morning then another three hours later. Between the strange hours of classes and other school related organizations, many students do not have the right amount of free time to work the hours that many employers want. Oh, and you cannot forget the Saturdays us students want free for football games.

The list is endless, really, and it all depends on who you are and what your past experiences have been. Finding a job in your college town can be insanely difficult because of so many different factors. That being said, if you keep applying place after place, there is a high chance that you can find a job somewhere that you will enjoy.

Good luck and happy job hunting!

I've been super busy lately with school work, studying, etc. Besides the fact that I do nothing but AP chemistry and AP economics, I constantly think of stupid questions that are almost impossible to answer. So, maybe you could answer them for me, and if not then we can both wonder what the answers to these 15 questions could be.

To My Loving Boyfriend,

  • Thank you for all that you do for me
  • Thank you for working through disagreements with me
  • Thank you for always supporting me
  • I appreciate you more than words can express
  • You have helped me grow and become a better person
  • I can't wait to see where life takes us next
  • I promise to cherish every moment with you
  • Thank you for being my best friend and confidante
  • I love you and everything you do

To start off, here's something I don't say nearly enough: thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart. You do so much for me that I can't even put into words how much I appreciate everything you do - and have done - for me over the course of our relationship so far. While every couple has their fair share of tiffs and disagreements, thank you for getting through all of them with me and making us a better couple at the other end. With any argument, we don't just throw in the towel and say we're done, but we work towards a solution that puts us in a greater place each day. Thank you for always working with me and never giving up on us.

Because no one ever really leaves.

Ah, yes, good old Hauppauge. We are that town in the dead center of Long Island that barely anyone knows how to pronounce unless they're from the town itself or live in a nearby area. Hauppauge is home to people of all kinds. We always have new families joining the community but honestly, the majority of the town is filled with people who never leave (high school alumni) and elders who have raised their kids here. Around the town, there are some just some landmarks and places that only the people of Hauppauge will ever understand the importance or even the annoyance of.
