Spring isn't the only time for a fresh start.
The new season is here, and with it comes lovely weather and a chance to start fresh. I've always enjoyed this time of year the most because it feels like a transition into a new beginning.
However, it left me wondering why I considered Spring an opportunity for change.
In truth, I think many people look for a new beginning whenever possible. We jump at moments such as the New Year, a new start of the semester or a new life milestone.
These all represent a change.
And I have a tendency to bank a lot on these special occasions. With Spring around the corner, I envision myself starting to eat healthy again and being more studious. I eagerly jumped at the opportunity to reform my habits.
And it left me wondering, why wait?
Why do we wait for something symbolic to occur in order to enact change in our lives?
We love to find something external that is different (and oftentimes better) before turning inwards and reflecting on our own selves.
As lovely as they are, New Year's is just a holiday, and Spring is just a season.
If you are waiting for a sign to start doing that thing that's been in the back of your mind, don't wait for the next month or season to begin.
As wonderful as these fun and fresh occasions are, we should not limit ourselves to only consider a special occasion a time for growth.
Oftentimes at this point in the semester, I find it difficult to stay motivated. I promise myself I am going to do all of these new hobbies and go on all of these adventures as soon as Summer begins. And yet most of the times I am at home wasting time, waiting for a new moment to come in and inspire me.
There is no such thing as being too early of late to begin something new. The only thing you are waiting for to change is yourself.
All of the power for reformation exists inside of you at any point. It is not defined by the new flowers blooming or the start of April, instead, it starts with you making that choice to better yourself.
And I know that it is so tough to find inspiration within. That's why New Year's resolutions are so desirable to so many even though they hardly ever last. It offers inspiration and hope.
But hope can be found in a new book or video that inspires you to work out or try a new hobby. It can be found by calling a friend and telling them about a new idea you've been thinking about.
And I think when we start cultivating our own inspiration, it allows us to be less restricted by time. Instead, we begin to believe in the power within ourselves- that at any time, we can begin again.
