Finding Inspiration In Everyday Life

What inspires the articles we write?

The Odyssey community is full of writers who have taken on the challenge of taking a topic, any topic, and writing 500 words about it. We’re all here to share our perspective and show the world that there are a million different sides to every issue. As a content writer myself, I have to magically pull an idea from my brain every Friday. So where do these ideas come from?

What do I find important?

Looking at my life, I always have plenty of things that hold a place in my heart. Incredible people, a school I love, a large faith community and causes I have an emotional stake in. Looking down the Odyssey front page, you will see almost entirely political articles for the next few months. This is what is important to the people writing for the Odyssey. Others write about their faith, their family or where they grew up. Where we came from and what made them who they are today. We write because we have a story to share and we share pieces of ourselves by showing the world what’s important to us.

What warms my heart?

I totally get that this world was not created for optimists, but I refuse to let that stop me. There are so many acts of kindness that I see every day that I want to share with the world. There are so many great things that happen every single day that are covered up by ugly things going on in the world. Why not share beautiful ideas and stories with a community of people who are just trying to their best to make a better world? Some people share things that start a fire in their hearts while some people just want to spread a few warm fuzzies to their internet friends.

What do I talk about a lot?

I talk way too much. In recent years I’ve attempted to use my words to actually SAY something, but I’m still a work in progress. My article topics often come from conversations I’ve had in the past week or the past month. I think this is where a lot of the “an open letter to…” concepts come from. Some of these letters are to a person they’ve never met, some of them are meant for a person they’re praying for, and some of them are to people they already know.

What is going on in my life?

I have a tendency to write about the mess I’m sitting in the middle of. If you want to see how my week was, just look at my article for the week. I’m so sorry you guys have to witness this.

OMG I NEED TO FINISH THIS BY MIDNIGHT ON FRIDAY AND ITS ALREADY 1AM ON SATURDAY

My biggest writing motivator is my Odyssey writing community at Fort Hays State University. They surround me with love and ideas and I feel an obligation to contribute to our content goal each week. I rarely meet my deadline at a reasonable time, but somehow they love me anyway.

Every week I’m asked to look at the world around me and write about it. I never really know what I’ll write until I sit down and force myself to write an article. Finding inspiration to write absolutely sucks, but it seems to be around me all the time. I just have to focus it into 500 words. Pray for me.

The 5 Painfully True Stages Of Camping Out At The Library

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

"I want to thank Google, Wikipedia, and whoever else invented copy and paste. Thank you."

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

As this semester wraps up, students can’t help but be stressed about finals. After all, our GPAs depends on these grades! What student isn’t worrying about their finals right now? It’s “goodbye social life, hello library” time from now until the end of finals week.

1. Finals are weeks away, I’m sure I’ll be ready for them when they come.
