Only 6 short months ago, I received a diagnosis that I was not expecting. After losing my hair, constant stomach pains, and an inability to sleep, I went to the doctor with many fears. It was a relief to hear, "I believe you are suffering from anxiety". Afterwards, when I was reading the side effects of my new medication, I realized the seriousness of my diagnosis. The medication was going to help, but if I really wanted to heal I was going to have to take matters into my own hands. These are the things I do everyday to help with my anxiety.
1. Take prescribed medication. It seems simple, but sometimes it is difficult to drug myself up. I question why and if I really need it. But honestly, modern technology permits us to have a way to level our bodies to a healthy state. Why not take advantage of that? Needing medication for a mental health problem is the same as needing it to keep your heart pumping. Be sure to download "Start" on your smartphone if you are taking medication. It will help you track your mood and improvements so you know if you medication is right for you! Also it has great, discreet, reminders to take your medication if you wish!
2. Work out. It is amazing how strong you feel after running. There is no better feeling in the world than thinking, "I can't do this" and later accomplishing that task. Even if it is just stretching every night or doing push ups. Tell yourself,
"Humans are capable of so much more than we know. I am capable of more than I know."
Pushing yourself physically shows you that you are strong enough to take on anxiety.
3. Talking about mental health. It's been such a taboo thing for so many years to have anxiety or depression. What people do not realize is just how common it is. By talking about it, I have found others within my friends and family that feel the same way I do. It is comforting to know I am not alone and at the same time let someone else know the same.
4. Focusing on myself. Splurge on you every once in awhile. Something as simple as getting your eyebrows done or buying a great pair of pants may be the thing you need to get through the day. Living with anxiety, you constantly worry about everything. Take away as many insecurities as possible and take care of yourself.
5. Staying Organized. I take time to journal and schedule my day every morning or night. This gives me a moment to take a deep breath and think, "I can do this." Knowing what I am doing when and where gives me a small amount of piece of mind. Try a planner from www.passionplanner.com if you need a great way to organize! Their free prints are perfect for scheduling a day.
