One of my favorite quotes is " Anyone can find the dirt in someone. Be the one who finds the gold." Proverbs 11:27. I stumbled upon this quote a year or so ago, when I went searching for answers in the Bible during a hard time. I wanted there to be a reason as to why god decided to turn my world upside down. I was googling things like "bible verses about hardships" or "how to find strength through god" I don't know why I thought I was going to find some magical answer that was going to make me feel better.
I wasn't even raised in a super religious household where we even talked about things like this. For some reason, I just thought it was something I needed to do. To make a long story short, I never found the answers I was looking for but I did find gold. It's funny how the things you acquire when you're not looking for them are sometimes what you need to hear.
When I came about these words they really made me stop and think about how I was living my life. There are so many ways to look at what that quote is trying to say. The most obvious way is to take it verbatim and try to find the gold in every person that you meet. This isn't an easy task and honestly, it was really hard for me to grasp at first. I learned that I am very quick to judge, and that I could be missing out on meeting great people if I never take the time to find their "gold". I also was never looking for gold in myself. I was picking myself apart piece by piece and over analyzing every flaw I have and comparing myself to others. I learned to look at what I'm good at, my achievements, and the qualities that make me who I am.
I have also been able to recognize that I am not trying to find gold in life itself. It's easy to get caught up in what makes you unhappy rather than what you have going for yourself. Always focusing on the negative rather than the positive can significantly change your outlook on life. I know it's easier said than done but, if you look for your piece of gold every day, you may just be surprised with what you find. I'm striving to find my gold, and I think you should too.
