"Finding Dory": Lessons For Young Adults

(Warning: spoilers ahead. Also, the movie can be seen in 3D, but nothing really pops out, so don't waste the money on the 3D version.)

I was lucky enough to see "Finding Dory" and I was not disappointed. "Finding Nemo" came out on May 30th, 2003 and the children of that time had to wait over 13 years for the sequel. Those children grew and matured over those 13 years, and were excited to see their favorite animated movie grow into a sequel. "Finding Dory" taught me very valuable lessons, and I was very pleased with how the movie turned out.

Lesson #1

As the children who loved "Finding Nemo" now enter their early twenties, this movie teaches us that as long as you know where home is, you can do anything you put your mind to. Following your dreams means nothing if you don't think about where you started. You would be nowhere if it wasn't for the people who loved and raised you, even if they weren't their physically. Dory lost her parents and searched all her life to find them and when she finally did, she remembered what her parents told her as a child, follow the shells and "it means you can do whatever you put your mind to." Follow the shells and it will lead you to your dreams, as long as you remember where the first trail of shells lead you, which was home.

Lesson #2

That family is not only blood. Family is anyone who is there for you when you need them and will always be there for you. Just because someone is not directly related to you doesn't mean they aren't your family. Family is all your friends and loved ones, the ones you want to be with you when you're happy or excited, but also sad and depressed. In "Finding Dory," Dory found Marlin and Nemo and they became her family even though they aren't even the same fish breed. They became her family because they were there for her when she needed them and they would die for her. That's family.

Lesson #3

You can make friends wherever you go. Dory made friends everywhere she went, from a fish tank, to the ocean, to an aquarium, she always had a friend with her. She made friends with a cranky old sea creature, who became very important in Dory's adventure. Even in "Finding Nemo," Dory made friends with everyone she met, including Bruce the shark and his shark posse, and the group of fish who made fun of Marlin, the group who told Dory and Marlin to go through the rocks and not over them. This movie teaches that even though you are out of your element, there are always going to be people to welcome you and make your life and adventure more enjoyable.

Lesson #4

Never give up your dreams! Dory dreamed to find her parents and worked most of her life trying to reunite with them. She traveled across the ocean to find them and risked her life to be with them. She worked hard and long to find what she's been looking for for most of her life and if this movie doesn't teach determination and following your dreams, then I don't know what does.

"Finding Dory" was a great movie with a lot of important lessons and I was so happy with how it turned out. It was definitely worth the 13-year wait. I advise that everyone go to see "Finding Dory" as soon as possible and bring your kids, friends, or family because it's a movie that is meant to be watched with loved ones.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

10 Reasons To Thank Your Best Friend

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

290
Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
