Whether we give ourselves lifestyle
goals for the summer or New Year’s resolutions in the winter, we hope to release our day-to-day stress, become healthier and focus on our relationships. In today’s fast-paced society, finding balance in our lives has become our mantra.
I realized how crucial having a balanced life is last weekend while taking a yoga class, most likely in a classic position such as downward-facing dog or child’s pose. My yoga instructor explained that as we perform the poses, we will experience emotions while stretching — we may become angry from tension or find peace as we rest. She reminded us to focus on our breaths, release tension and, for an hour, let go of our worries.
Consequently, I became aware that there is a correlation between our mental and physical health. As we strengthen our abdomen’s core, we must also strengthen our soul and mind. We cannot focus on one and neglect the other.
To become physically fit, it takes time and dedication, as well as mental stamina. To become mentally healthy, it also takes time, dedication and physical energy.
As time slips through our fingers, however, we tell ourselves, “If I can just find a balance between my work, school, sports, relationships...” (you fill in the blank).
Even in the summer, when many of our school concerns are postponed for a few months, we still manage to feel unbalanced. Why? We neglect taking care of ourselves, whether physically or mentally.
For a balanced life, we need to focus on ourselves and rest. We need to stop. If we don’t, we physically and mentally become tired, tense and restless.
Tips for finding your balance:
1. Make healthy changes for your physical wellbeing.
Often, food and exercise affects your mood, and when you eat right and workout, you feel better and think straighter.
2. Establish a new routine.
Making simple changes in your routine, such as getting more sleep or waking up earlier to get your day started, can increase your energy and sense of purpose in your day.
3. Let go and focus on your breaths.
Many of our worries are not as important as we make them out to be. Relax and find joy in what makes you happy. Most importantly, breathe.
4. Understand what makes you contract and expand.
What immobilizes you? What are your fears? What do you want most in life? What are your passions? What makes you feel alive?
5. Begin journaling.
Write down your thoughts, ideas and everything that inspires you. When you put pen to paper and write what you're thinking and feeling, you give yourself time to reflect and understand yourself and life.
6. Realign yourself and strengthen your core.
Reestablish your priorities and make them your top commitments. Your priorities may include focusing on your spiritual walk, family and relationships. Make your passions some of your commitments and goals. Create healthy boundaries for yourself and with the people in your life.
