Living a Christian life, in a community of loving believers is the best. Until you are removed from that community and have to find contentment in your current predicament.
We are constantly told that living life with Jesus, our homie, is living a life full of adventure. That we can find adventure in and through Christ. If it is a life of adventure, why am I sitting at home bored for most of my summer... It has been on my heart lately to be vulnerable and real with people about a life of adventure in Christ. And if I'm being real, it is not always all that fun and exciting. Sometimes it is boring. Sometimes it is me being stuck in the same place for three months. Christ promises us life, and life to the full through him. It is a done deal. Through him we are full, and fulfilled. Perfect. So then why do we as humans still crave purpose and desire earthly things? We desire more adventures, more beauty, more experiences. But don't we get those through Christ?
It is hard to be content with what you are doing, when we are constantly told to go do more. We are always being used by our elders, and by each other. Our lives are basically a competition of who can have the best resume. Our generation is told that we are lazy, so we go get a job and go to school. We get an internship over the summer, we go on a missions trip over spring break. We are the generation of opportunities. A favorite line of mine is that God does not give us things, He gives us opportunities. So all these opportunities we are taking, are they from HIM? Christ places these little adventures on our hearts for a purpose. To grow, to fail, to overcome, to succeed. Whatever it is, good or bad, it is through HIM.
So how can we become content when we can't see these opportunities, and feel like we are doing nothing purposeful with our lives? PRAY! We must pray for contentment. Pray for opportunities to have adventure, to learn something new, to become more patient. All these things can be given to us. All we have to do is ask.
Matthew 7:7 says, "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you."
All you have to do is ask. The adventure is found when you grow closer to Christ, and ask him for an opportunity. From there it is our own choice. To be bold and walk out on a new path, or stick with our comfort and lazy lifestyle. It is one thing to say that you are discontent with your adventure in Christ, it is another thing to do something about it. Christ is constantly answering us in ways that we might not even notice. We need to be still, and listen. Open our eyes to the possibilities and choices he is laying out in front of us.
Being discontent with your Adventure in Christ is okay. As long as you acknowledge it and do something about it. You can't just wait around for God to wave a magic wand and grant you all your wishes. It doesn't work like that. Let serving him and loving others be your adventure sometimes. Let just having a quiet time and hanging out with him be your adventure. Or maybe he has given you a special opportunity or mission. You better listen and take it. Adventure is out there... you just have to ask, seek, and knock.
